Intermittent HDMI - manufacturing defect?

Post by benwillcox »

Hi, I've had well over 100 N2+ devices so far, and had very few issues with the hardware.

However, I have recently (in the last few months) had 2 units straight out of the box which appear to have a poor connection on the HDMI socket. By wiggling the HDMI cable near the HDMI connector, the image cuts in and out. These have been replaced by the distributor under warranty.

I have just received another 20 units from the very latest batch from Hardkernel, and the first two straight out of the box have this issue. The third unit is OK. I suspect that there is an issue with a batch of the HDMI sockets used. I have contacted the distributor about this, but I would be grateful if somebody at HardKernel could investigate this issue please.

The code printed on the HDMI socket of both defective units is 200821A2.
The code on a working socket is 190619A2.

Thanks,
Ben

Thank you for sharing the issue, would you be able to share a photo of the HDMI connector and it would be grateful if you can share a quick video clip when the display happens with problematic HDMI connector.

Thank you.

Here is a photo of the connector on one of the faulty units: https://photos.app.goo.gl/kThLv794evkY1xSu6 and https://photos.app.goo.gl/4hmYoVkXeeryHDv89
Nothing appears to be wrong to the naked eye.

Here is a video of the first two boards I have tested, the second one is worse than the first: https://youtu.be/l9t6BicWMmk

I think the HDMI receptacle on the N2+ boards and the HDMI cable plug both have some mechanical tolerance issues.
If you don't mind, we will send you a few HDMI cables we've been used since several years ago.

Hi thanks for the reply.
I'm not sure about that, as I've tried another HDMI cable of a completely different brand and age, and the problem still follows the Odroid units, and both the cables work fine on a known working Odroid unit.

I found another defective unit with HDMI connector ID 190614A2, so it may not be confined to the specific connector batch.

Out of 5 tested units the first 2 were faulty, the next 2 were ok, and the 5th was faulty. So at this point I'm returning whole batch to the distributor to investigate further.

We've been shipping 4~5K of N2+ boards every months in this years.
But, you are the first customer who raised the HDMI connector issue as far as I remember.

Anyway, we will contact our UK distributor to get the problematic N2+ boards for investigation.
Did you purchase the N2+ boards from odroid.co.uk?
