"apt install --no-install-recommends wireguard-tools" resolves this.

Small note, we won't have official Linux kernel 5.12.

It's been long time since last kernel update, 5.11 while 5.12 is for testing, I've found a some regression in 5.12 and have not switched from 5.11 yet. Probably the vanilla Linux kernel 5.13 will be release in a week and I already started to port the patches to 5.13 and testing it, the next Linux kernel version would be 5.13 and hope it happens in 2 weeks. :)

Interesting! Care to tell us what was wrong with 5.12? I'm using it as we speak and found no problems whatsoever.
No benefits either though..

Yes, I agree with this question.

And again, yes, I couldn't see the benefit or the harm.

I upload the tested packages on my end, so the kernel version you are running would not have major issue. I had a couple of issues with later version, 2-3 patches were not merged into 5.12 kernel for HC4 and found rebooting issue again. Panfrost is also a burden to update. Then, I lost the right chance to switch the kernel version and 5.13 is coming.

Anyway, switching major version does not offer big advantage, keep updating to use newer kernel for Panfrost/DRM and other kernel features.

Hi

after successfully upgrade to 21.04 from 20.10 I added the Linuxfactory apt repositories and performed another update.

After the reboot I know get the screen glitching mentioned many times in this thread.

Is there a known fix for this.

I found this by tobetter:

In case you like to use old version which has less rendering issue with X11 and Wayland, use this commands. This command seriese will download and install old packages (version 21.1.0-devel+202104231552), you can update with the lastest package later with sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade. viewtopic.php?p=328361#p328361

Should I do this or are there other fixes available?

If you have logged in with X11 session, current package will make so annoying screen glitches. Wayland session does not. If you do not need any specific GPU extensions, please do use the script and install the legacy version on Apr/2021. The version won't make a trouble and no hugh performance regression.

Yes I'm using MATE on X11.

Does the 5.12 kernel help at all?

Glad to know it's working.
The problem of screen glitch is not a kernel issue at all, the problem happens in Panprost driver in Mesa library.

20210701 New Linux kernel version has been uploaded

As noted a week ago, new kernel v5.13 has been uploaded and can be installed. Since the new kernel is switched to default kernel, this version must be installed manually if you like to try and it will be default kernel later once more testing is done.

Installation:

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install linux-image-5.13.0-odroid-arm64
Version check:

Code: Select all

$ dpkg -l | grep linux-image-5.13
ii linux-image-5.13.0-odroid-arm64 5.13.0-202107012338~hirsute arm64 Linux 5.13 for 64-bit ARMv8 machines
$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 5.13.0-odroid-arm64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Ubuntu 5.13.0-202107012338~hirsute (2021-07-01) aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux
Please let me know if you discover a major issue with new kernel.

Thank you. :)

Thanks @tobetter
I installed 5.13, everything is fine,.
I use it daily, I will share my experience.
I haven't encountered any problems so far.

Code: Select all

n2p@odroid:~$ uname -a
Linux odroid 5.13.0-odroid-arm64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Ubuntu 5.13.0-202107012338~hirsute (2021-07-01) aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux
------
I don't have screen tearing and many other problems in X11, the solution I found for this is to install Gnome.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install gnome

Header file is necessary when you have a driver source file which should be compiled to new kernel. If you need to build new driver, you can install the header package with this.

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
Or, give the package name like sudo apt install linux-headers-5.13.0-odroid-arm64.

mpv error : h264_v4l2m2m : output POLLERR

I installed ubuntu desktop with default language at ubuntu-21.04-server-odroidc4-20210502.img . When I tried to run mpv ( 0.32.0 ) with cmd : mpv --hwdec=auto ./test_videoclip.mkv

It throws some erros and exit. The terminal disables right-click and related context , thus I am not able to paste the detailed errors/warnings. Does any of you try mpv hardware acceleration at this img. ?

Probably not. Try installing GNOME instead. You need Wayland desktop, not Xorg.

That's your confirmation. :)
The kernel included in this release is prepared for hardware support of Wayland desktops. The Xorg is not supported, meaning that artifacts like that may happen. :)

You may also try building Wayfire yourself. Many people like it for its looks, but I prefer simplicity. :)

Never mind :) The desktop I logined DOES is gnome/wayland. The effect of mpv is very impressive --- the best mpv I have ever played with the hw. acceleration :

odroid@hirsute-server:~/Desktop$ mpv ./test_video.mkv
(+) Video --vid=1 (*) (h264 1024x576 25.000fps)
(+) Audio --aid=1 --alang=eng (*) (aac 2ch 48000Hz)
[vo/gpu/wayland] GNOME's wayland compositor is known to have many serious issues with mpv. Switch to GNOME's xorg session for the best experience.
[vaapi] libva: vaGetDriverNameByIndex() failed with unknown libva error, driver_name = (null)
AO: [pulse] 48000Hz stereo 2ch float
VO: [gpu] 1024x576 yuv420p
AV: 00:05:03 / 00:29:31 (17%) A-V: 0.000 Dropped: 12

// -------- The following error is due to screen-saving , my bad -------------------
Audio/Video desynchronisation detected! Possible reasons include too slow
hardware, temporary CPU spikes, broken drivers, and broken files. Audio
position will not match to the video (see A-V status field).

AV: 00:10:35 / 00:29:31 (35%) A-V: 0.000 Dropped: 47
// ------------------- screen saving resume --------------------------------------------

Exiting... (Quit)
odroid@hirsute-server:~/Desktop$

Does any of you know how to make/build the related packages/kernel to achieve this please ? I would like to build one like that :)

Do we need Ubuntu 21.10?

It won't be available today, maybe sometime later around Sep/2021 for ODROID if required since Ubuntu *.10 version is only for short term support.

mpv authors are also know for not being interested in mobile devices and single board computers, so there's no use asking them for any help :/

I can't help you with GNOME on Wayland. I use Sway on Wayland and play youtube on mpv all the time, but I do not recommend it for casual users.

The support comes from you, so I can't see why it's short term ;)

But no, I don't need it. Personally I'm after Panfrost updates, and anything else I can build myself.

Personally I prefer stepping through LTS-versions (next 22.04).
I updated to 20.10 and 21.04 because of panfrost and the kernel support.
Before the upgrade to 22.04 either 21.10 or an 21.04 extension is fine by me.
If 21.10 is offered I will upgrade.

There will be a gap in the official support from januari to april.
One should use Ubuntu LTS if stability and support are really important anyway (like for a HC4-NAS).
I guess the odroid packages will be updated when needed during that time.

New package BOX64 uploaded. I've tested a couple of simple x86_64 binary and it looks run, could not test other intersting games in many Youtube regarding to BOX64 since I do not have such binaries at the moment. Maybe some of you can try and share how it works.

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt install box64
sudo reboot
Aftre rebooting, just run box64 with your x86_64 code.

Code: Select all

$ box64
Box64 with Dynarec v0.1.3 81a7eca built on Jul 12 2021 06:07:13

This is Box64, the Linux x86_64 emulator with a twist

Usage is box64 [options] path/to/software [args]
to launch x86_64 software
 options can be :
'-v'|'--version' to print box64 version and quit
'-h'|'--help' to print box64 help and quit
You can also set some environment variables:
BOX64_PATH is the box64 version of PATH (default is '.:bin')
BOX64_LD_LIBRARY_PATH is the box64 version LD_LIBRARY_PATH (default is '.:lib')
BOX64_LOG with 0/1/2/3 or NONE/INFO/DEBUG/DUMP to set the printed debug info (level 3 is level 2 + BOX64_DUMP)
BOX64_DUMP with 0/1 to dump elf infos
BOX64_NOBANNER with 0/1 to enable/disable the printing of box64 version and build at start
BOX64_DYNAREC_LOG with 0/1/2/3 or NONE/INFO/DEBUG/DUMP to set the printed dynarec info
BOX64_DYNAREC with 0/1 to disable or enable Dynarec (On by default)
BOX64_NODYNAREC with address interval (0x1234-0x4567) to forbid dynablock creation in the interval specified
BOX64_TRACE_FILE with FileName to redirect logs in a file (or stderr to use stderr instead of stdout) BOX64_DLSYM_ERROR with 1 to log dlsym errors
BOX64_LOAD_ADDR=0xXXXXXX try to load at 0xXXXXXX main binary (if binary is a PIE)
BOX64_NOSIGSEGV=1 to disable handling of SigSEGV
BOX64_NOSIGILL=1 to disable handling of SigILL
BOX64_X11THREADS=1 to call XInitThreads when loading X11 (for old Loki games with Loki_Compat lib) BOX64_LIBGL=libXXXX set the name (and optionnaly full path) for libGL.so.1
BOX64_LD_PRELOAD=XXXX[:YYYYY] force loading XXXX (and YYYY...) libraries with the binary
BOX64_ALLOWMISSINGLIBS with 1 to allow to continue even if a lib is missing (unadvised, will probably crash later)
BOX64_NOPULSE=1 to disable the loading of pulseaudio libs
BOX64_NOGTK=1 to disable the loading of wrapped gtk libs
BOX64_NOVULKAN=1 to disable the loading of wrapped vulkan libs
BOX64_JITGDB with 1 to launch "gdb" when a segfault is trapped, attached to the offending process

But Chromium is already in Ubuntu, why is it necessary?

1. Can't get HDMI audio working in 5.12 and 5.13 kernels. On 5.11 it works fine (but the graphics performance is worse than with 5.12 or 5.13: the window moving is sluggish)
2. mpv, when trying hardware decoding with

Code: Select all

mpv --hwdec=auto video.mkv
crashes.

I'm using Ubuntu 21.04 "20210502 - Linux kernel v5.11" image on ODROID-C4, with Ubuntu Desktop installed with tasksel (Gnome on Wayland session).
Are these bugs known? Do you have it as well, or am I did something wrong?

Yes I did, and it worked for 5.11, but when I update to 5.12 or 5.13, I can see only "dummy output" in Pulseaudio. Speaker-test fails on every alsa hardware (hw and plughw) device as well. The kernel console is spammed with:

Code: Select all

fe.dai-link-0: ASoC: no backend DAIs enabled for fe.dai-link-0
Reverting back to 5.11 (removing 5.12 and/or 5.13 with apt remove) brings sound back.

That's strange...I am also running 5.13 with Gnome Desktop and have audio. Will try to reinstall the package again?

That worked! Thanks! So the installation script should be applied upon every kernel update? You may need add it to initramfs hook script then.
What about video hardware acceleration, is it known to be broken?

I would consider to rerun the package, but this did not happen so far after kernel is upgraded. Does the video issue happen since 5.13 update?

Hardware video decoding never worked for me. Tested on 5.11, 5.12, 5.13. Does it require special configuration or packages? I've only installed mpv.
It works with software decoding.

Please note, new Mesa package for Panfrost is ready to upload. New version always has an unexpected regressions but this time it's not too bad. New package will be uploaded in 12 hours hopefully and detail package version will be uploaded here when it's ready. For the benchmark scores and what regressions I mean, please refer to the link Panfrost Status on ODROID-N2.

Okay, we shall see if we can spot the regression ourselves. ;)
There is however a way to revert the mesa package if stuff go wrong?

Absoltely, note down the package version you have before updating and you can revert the packages with this band-aid script with noted package version.
