Help - Sound Server ?

Post by sdrink89 »

Hi,

sorry for my english - I'm from austria ;-)

I want to use my ODROID N2 as an "Audio Server". I want to control Apps on the Odroid with my Phone or my iPAD (Music Apps like Spotify, {maybe} youtube, etc.).

Do you have some ideas how to do that?
I don't need graphics or anything.

THANKS!

Greetings from Vienna,
Andreas

Hi!

I've got an SBC in my kitchen that I use solely for playing music. Normally I run music via ssh, like so:

Code: Select all

ssh <kitchen_sbc> mpv --no-video <link to youtube>
It uses youtube-dl module to download youtube content, which is always outdated in ubuntu repositories. The easiest way to update it is to use Python3's pip:

Code: Select all

sudo -H pip install --upgrade youtube-dl
I don't mind the fact I am unable to pause or select music being in the kitchen, I usually listen to the whole albums.

For the thing you want to achieve, I think the best bet is to use a Bluetooth USB dongle and configure your N2 to act as a bluetooth speaker.

N2 is way too powerful for a task like that, though. I use N2+ as my everyday desktop (I'm writing this post on it).
For playing music in the kitchen I got RasPi 3A+ for about $10, but virtually any SBC will be able to do that, even Pi Zero - the weakest SBC in the world.
Mine has 512MB of RAM so I had to tweak the mpv settings so it won't try to buffer whole 2 hour video :D Limiting the buffer to 20MB did the trick, it's about 500 seconds of audio and works very well even through weak WiFi.

EDIT: Another way to make a proper "Sound Server" is to make it work as a PulseAudio server - you can configure your Linux PC so it plays all sounds on a remote PA server through the network. Unfortunately, only Linux boxes support PulseAudio, and from my experience it works terribly through WiFi - very choppy and I never found any way to force larger buffer or whatever.

Or if you want even more: have a look at volumio.org
The latest version for the N2/N2+ would be volumio-2.882-2021-05-07-odroidn2.
