go super - adapting HK 18.04 release to include desktop environment

Post by irongiant_32 »

My goal is to use the go super as a remote for hardware, and in order to do this, I need to launch a specific desktop application.

1 - Does a desktop environment come with the 18.04+ES image? If not, what are the recommendations besides MATE (too heavy I think).
2 - How can I disable emulationstation from autolaunching, and instead boot into a Desktop environment?

Thanks in advance!

A desktop environment is not included but may be installed using 'apt' as would be done for any other Ubuntu image. I have only used MATE.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install lightdm ubuntu-mate-desktop
Note that screen rotation will need to be enabled, and installing a desktop is not officially supported. It may cause issues with one or more of the emulators.

Note that meveric has a debian distro for oga/ogs for non-gaming purposes, where you can easily install desktop/antimicro.

Wow, thank you for the extremely fast responses! I did see the debian distro for ogs by meveric. I may end up needing to use that, but the main software piece I'm looking to use supports Ubuntu. I guess there's a good chance that it would work since same foundation.... I'll see if I can get Lubuntu desktop or Xubuntu desktop first, and if those don't work, I'll go back to Mate. That is where I started, and performance was not great, but I could probably remove a lot of overhead...

Were you able to make any progress on this?

I can install mate and lightdm but can't get it to boot into the desktop. Just a blank screen.

The issue turns out to be that the "greeter" is customized by ubuntu and does not work for unknown reasons. You can either install gdm3 or add a config file to use lightdm as noted in the other thread:

Or you can simply use: viewtopic.php?p=277774#p277774
where this is available for over a year already working fine.
Simply starting setup-odroid and select you want to install MATE Desktop and everything is done automatically for you.
