How-to upgrade to 20.04

Post by bk_XU_AZ »

Is there a clear guide for updating the N2 Ubuntu version? I keep getting various errors. I fix one and anther comes up. Here's the latest:

Code: Select all

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This was likely caused by:
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge
package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and
try the upgrade again.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If
you want to investigate this yourself the log files in
'/var/log/dist-upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade.
Specifically, look at 'main.log' and 'apt.log'.

Restoring original system state

Aborting
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
I already purged the single package owner besides ubuntu, and odroid using ppa-purge.

"do-release-upgrade" worked for me several months ago.
If it doesn't work now, consider doing backup your important files and freshly install the latest 20.04.2 image.

Well, of course I now have the new version (on a second eMMC), but restoring everything will be a huge job (MySQL databases, custom bash files, Webmin, etc.). Is there a way to force an upgrade? I know mu ppa repositories are good (I eliminated all but the ubuntu ones, after trying with only the ubuntu and odroid repositories intact).

I can make it work by copying files, reinstalling things and tweaking- but if I could just do a version upgrade it'll save me a couple days work.

What do the logs in /var/log/dist-upgrade say? For 20.04 I had to manually uninstall some packages before the upgrade (e.g. python2). The logs should complain which packages break your setup.
I agree that reinstalling is a pain

I think you got me onto the problem, mad_ady. I got these (but don't know how to fix them):

Code: Select all

2021-03-05 16:14:16,237 WARNING Can't mark 'ubuntu-mate-core' for upgrade (E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.)
2021-03-05 16:14:16,238 DEBUG Marking 'ubuntu-mate-desktop' for upgrade
2021-03-05 16:14:16,915 WARNING Can't mark 'ubuntu-mate-desktop' for upgrade (E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.)
2021-03-05 16:20:58,659 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'Broken packages after upgrade: ubuntu-mate-core, ubuntu-mate-desktop'

I'd try uninstalling both of them (and reinstalling post upgrade)

Glad to hear it. Such problems are not arm specific - happened to me on intel as well.
