Screen Turns Magenta...

Post by leepage@eml.cc »

Hello,

Once a week, the screen on my wife's N2 (Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS) turns magenta when blanking. If you move the mouse, then it looks like one of the CRT's guns has died - except it is an LCD display. Once I reboot the machine, it is fine for about another week. I can force the same issue if I tell the power manager to turn off the display if idle.

I believe this is the log entry pertaining to the failure:

I've swapped out displays, so it doesn't appear to be a display issue.

Any ideas as to what's going wrong?

Thanks!

Seems like it detects hdmi has been unplugged and then replugged. Could you check that the cable is attached correctly and maybe test with a different cable?
You could also try setting disable_hpd to true (or 1, I don't remember) in boot.ini

I just implemented that. I'll know in a week whether that fixed it or not.

Thank you!

Hi.

I made the change, and changed out the HDMI cable for good measure. Then I made the power manager turn off the display.

It did the same thing.

At this point, I'm guessing it is a hardware issue. My N2 has the same OS as my wife's. They're both N2s. And, short of re-imaging her root partition, the only thing I haven't done is to swap out the N2.

Thoughts?

Have you tried changing disablehpd=true option by editing boot.ini or config.ini file?

It is also very worth to try the latest Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS image to narrow down root causes too.

Hi odroid. Yes, I tried setting disablehpd=true, but that didn't help.

I'll try the upgrade and see. Thanks for the idea.

I know this is a weird question: Is it an LG monitor?

No. Currently, it is a ViewSonic. And I've swapped out the monitor previously as well.

I'm guessing you've had some issues with LG...

Yes, I had what sounded like the identical issue. I typically love LG's IPS displays, on phones, tablets, laptops and monitors- except this time. I returned it, thankfully. BUT- next time this happens, try going into the monitor's menu while it's acting up (if you can), and change the gamma (a little or a lot) and see if it instantly improves. That worked for the LG (oddly enough), then I'd put it back to where it was and it would work through a few more sleep cycles and happen again. One gamma setting was the worst, but none were trouble free with that monitor. I got an Acer at Costco (also IPS) for $99, and I liked it so much we got another one so my wife could have two monitors.

I'll give that a try. That's odd that changing gamma would "fix" it.
