Boot from USB drive broken in 1.22 BIOS

Post by defcon »

Hi guys.

The H2+ hangs if boot priority #1 is set to USB drive in 1.22 and 1.23 BIOS. It hangs on either AMI logo or HK logo (quiet boot enabled).
1.12 BIOS works fine, boots from USB without delay. Tested on two USB thumb drives. Both with EFI (UEFI boot), not tested MBR boot.

I had to downgrade to 1.12, no big issue, just heads up.

We will try to reproduce the issue.
Which OS image(UEFI boot) was flashed in your USB drives?

Thanks. I used Unraid (https://unraid.net/download) and HK's own BIOS image, which contains /EFI (https://dn.odroid.com/ODROID-H2/bios/)

A note. It is unattended boot that does not work. If you press Del, get into BIOS menu, press Save and Exit, board boots fine from USB. If you press Save and Reset, its same as unattended, it hangs.

Hi.

I just have tried to reproduce that issue but it doesn't appear on my side. My H2+ runs on 1.22 BIOS.
I used Ubuntu and Unraid OS as a boot media OS and both boots well from the USB drive.

Once flashing Unraid OS to the USB drive using a dedicated USB flashing app, I found a UEFI option hidden by the "Customize" button and this does affect the boot condition on H2+.
It seems you already know this but we should ensure as much as we can. :)

If it is the UEFI boot problem, I'd like to suggest you check these things first,
- Checking again the "Allow UEFI Boot" option on the Unraid OS USB Creator app.
- Flashing Ubuntu 20.04 or 20.10 image and try out with that. Windows USB could be the alternatives.

If this has nothing to do with the UEFI thing, how about checking these things,
- Disable the Quite boot option again. As shown in the above photo, the boot menu occupies only the quarter size (or much smaller) of the monitor. So I guess it may not hang. :?:
Have you waited for enough time on the "hangs screen"?

Please check, since we couldn't reproduce that problem on our side, for now. :)

Yea ... minutes. Just to confirm, in your tests, does it boot normally from USB drive if you just press the power button (not entering BIOS at all)? This is how Unraid works, USB is the only boot drive option.
1. Configure to boot from USB
2. Power off the board
3. Power on the board
4. Boot should proceed to OS

In my case, at step 4, I saw just logo and nothing was happening.

Yes, it does. It straights to the USB drive which is Unraid installed, not entering BIOS.

Are there any other conditions that I can do on my seat?

Cannot think of anything else, sorry. I reset BIOS to defaults in my tests. Maybe I'll try again later, when we'll have BIOS with TPM :))

I suspect it is the monitor. I used portable 5", for Raspberry Pi kind of display. Something in BIOS video drivers has apparently changed between 1.12 and 1.22. I'll try normal monitor later.
