Hello Chris,
I studied now the datasheet of the SSD1309 and mostly everything you wrote about soldering must be correct, except the addressing of I2C.

* Putting the controller to I2C mode is done by BS1 to high. -> moving R4 to R3.
* Connecting SDA IN and SDA OUT is done by connecting together D1 and D2 -> R5 = 0 Ohms. To have bidirectional bus.
* Enabling MCU communication is done by CS to GND -> R7 = 0 Ohms. CS is not for addressing in I2C mode.
* D3 to D7, R/W and E(RD) must be pulled to GND. This is already done on the board.
* For addressing is used D/C(SA0), low->0x3c, high->0x3d. I don't know exactly the unconnected state, so must be measured, if it is pulled up or down. But as datasheet the initial state is 0x3c.
* RES is resetting the controller. The 10k / 10uF RC-circuit means that a reset is done in about 200 - 300ms after the power is applied. If this circuit is really necessary, reduce the capacitor. But I am in doubts about that this circuit is necessary.

If the display gets off, it could be that it is a driver thing. There is a command to power on and off the display in command register (0xae / 0xaf : off / on). Or do you have checked for some cold soldering that also could cause the display off?

Thanks for this @joerg :D
At the moment the display is working like it should.
So until the error is occuring again I leave it as it is now.

I got the two displays from aliexpress today.
They are quite similiar to the diymore.cc one but i think some resistors are not the same values.
Since @roidy seems to be pretty far with the SPI mode I am not soldering them.
I will wait untill the SPI mode is ready.

There is good news...
@roidy got the spi mode working
I will test it this week.

Meanwhile I made a .stp of the display, so maybe someone finds it useful for their own projects.
Keep in mind that the display height differs between the diymore and the one from aliexpress.
The diymore is 2.8mm and the aliexpress is 4mm.
In my 3D file the height is 4mm.

Today I tested the SPI mode and it works with the aliexpress display.

The 47nF capacitor has also worked for I2C to finally get this chapter closed :D

The last days I am trying to find some inspiration for the design of my case since I don't like all the different things I tryed.
The problem with a one-piece-case milled of aluminium is the integration of the display in front.
It needs to be screwed from inside but it's impossible to cut threads from the inside, pointing towards the front.
There is simply no space for the drill and the tap to work with.
While browsing the internet for some inspiration I found the website of cirrus7 fanless pc company and really liked their design:

Image

With a modular construction like this i could easily integrate a front plate which holds the display and attach a heat sink on top for cooling the N2.
But the parts are better suited for laser-cutting than actally milling them on a cnc machine.
At the moment I have no better idea than this

Thanks for your link but the problem is not the thickness of the material for which I would need a tap with bottoming chamfer.
What I meant was if the display is screwed from the inside, the thread has to be - hidden from the front - up in the corner inside the housing.
And for this there is no space for the drill and the tap to work.
Maybe the image gives a better illustration for my problem an where the thread has to be placed.

Clarification; drill and LH-tap from the outside (then insert plug to hide the hole)

Whis could work but I doubt it will look good.
Anyway, I am trying the way with the cirrus7 design I posted earlier.

If done properly with a press or ln2 interference fit you won't be able to find the hole with a magnifying glass.

A lot of time has passed because of other things in life and I couldn't decide on a design.
Until now, since I will take the sandwich-build.
Most parts could be laser-cut, only the display-holder and the cooler (yet to be designed) have to be milled.

I just started reading this thread, you've probably worked past it but there exists 90* attachments for drills. I use hex shank bits similar to these in remote locations.
Mostly self serve wrecking yards with a cordless screwdriver.

What is the material of the laser cut parts?
The laser-cut parts will be of stainless steel. The reason is they will be laser cut at my workplace and we have mostly stainless steel in stock.
The heat sink will be of aluminum and anodized black. It is easier to mill-cut

BTW. My Oled display doesn't work anymore after I have disassembled the display and the electronic board too much times and obviously bent too much the foil flat cable. I have ordered new and need too wait again long time ...

I deburred all the edges but I had problems to get into the groove for the backplate.
The laser couldn't do the 0,5mm right so there are some leftovers of melted material in there.
I have to see how i can fix this.
Besides that I am quite satisfied with the laser cut parts.

It must be awesome having a CO² laser which can cut stainless.

I like the design, it is unique compared to your previous XU4 case which was beautiful.

I can only use the machines i have access to, so I had to keep the CNC-milled part small.
The company I work for has two flatbed laser with nitrogen to prevent burn-off at the edges.
As usual my design is not suitable for mass production since its way too expensive.
The price is almost irrelevant to me personally and to be honest it's way over the top for a cooling solution.
The laser cut parts alone are around 60€ and I got a good price since I'm working here.
But I see those projects as a chance to work with autodesk inventor again, since I don't do it that often anymore.
There is always something to learn :D .

I reworked the narrow grooves with a saw blade so the backplate does fit now as well.
Now I need to wait for my friend who is doing the CNC-work

I understand your point, but that's not how things work here.
If you need to get such things from your company for free than you have either the wrong job or negotiated your salary not good enough.
The price I got was mainly for material costs.

My friend did the cnc-work of the heat sink.
Unfortunately he made a mistake while programming the the circumferential groove
so there is a cutout where actually shouldn't be one.
He needs to mill a little pocket to fit in new material to repair this, but I'm confident it couldn't be seen at the final assembly.

While waiting for the anodized heat sink, I painted the laser cut parts matte black.
For better surface a sandblasting machine would have been perfect but unfortunately I have no access to one so I have to live with it as is is now
