Battery not charging to 100%

Post by venn189 »

I charged my battery on my OGS, thought it would take just a few hours. . Checked it after 3 hours, but it was only half full. I left it charging over night, and the battery indicator only shows it half full.

Which image are you using? If you are using the Reference Image, the battery indicator in EmulationStation will not update unless keys are pressed.

[edit]
To clarify, keys refers to the DPAD, Start, Select, A, B, X, and Y buttons.

I am using the Reference Image, have played a few games in it. I just noticed that the battery indicator wasn't full when I went back to the home screen.

I didn't want to leave it on the charger longer - that would be over 6 hours - for fear of damaging the battery.

Tried another charging block for an hour or so. Battery indicator didn't change after turning on and scrolling through the menu. Going to use it until the battery dies completely and see how it charges from there. Hopefully it will sort itself out.

As we tested for various kinds of uses cases, in case of keeping poweroff and uboot charging animation, at least 5 hours are required to reach full battery charging value from very low battery value 3.6V.
And on emulationstation running status, more time must be needed because board current is constantly being consumed.
So to charge the battery more quickly, please poweroff your board and keep connecting USB charging cable. Charging continues in case of poweroff status.

And, there is auto cut off logic of battery charging when it reaches to max voltage capacity which is defined as 4.2V,
and we've tested the logic for the cases (1) poweroff case (2) uboot charging animation (3) runtime on emulationstation
and confirmed charging current is changed to '0' with the max battery voltage.
=> ideally : 4.2V, actual value : around 4.14V

You can check actual battery voltage value using this autotest mode. Can you try it?

Thanks for the info, I am still a little worried that it is still la problem. I will put it back on my Anker Multi port charger instead of a (cheaper) block- style wall charger since i am now home from work (Didn't want to leave it at home and not be able to play on it when on break!), and report the results.

Wouldn't the recovery image being updated resolve this? It states the newest revision directly deals with charging logic.

From OGS production line, the version, V1.4 (2020/12/07) of recovery image is already written in SPI Flash,
and the update from 2020/12/07 to 2021/01/13 is related to extreme low voltage logic and low voltage detection threshold,
so, I don't think that it's absolutely necessary to update spi flash image to 2021/01/13 to fix this charging topic.

(updated)
BTW, I will update the detailed history in the wiki page. ;)

So, the OGS has been on the charger since I got home today, approximately 4 hours. When I put it on there, the screen had two bars of battery showing. I just took it off, powered it on, and went into a game, and exited. The battery indicator is showing more than it has previously, but only 3 bars now. I would think that it would have been completely charged...

You need to fully charge and fully discharge the battery one time at least to make more accurate battery energy gauge coefficients.

Thanks for posting this, OP, and responding, odroid.

I have been running into a similar issue with OGS and the latest Retro Arena image. I will try the charge/discharge cycle to see if that fixes my issue.

Although I understand that most generic USB chargers should work, is there a charger that is recommended?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, and have a great day!

Got the same problem with the latest batocera image. Discharged until power off then charged it over night. After around eight hours the indicator only shows 75%.

Also on the charging animation I get negative mA values.

If you get negative charging current values even though you connect USB charger to your board,
battery voltage is reached to full charging and charging logic is off at that time.

As we tested, charging logic gets off when battery voltage meets around 4.18V,
and it shows 4.13~4.09V and operation current around +/-100mA because operation current is consumed without extra supply current provided.

If charging animation is running even when you get this situation, it can make users confused.
We will check re-start condition of charging from full charging condition and adjusted charging animation.

Short update... After 3 full cycles (charging and gaming until it shuts itself off) everything now works absolutely fine. Got 100% charge shown.

Thanks again for your support.
