CloudShell2 XU4Q Stops Responding? Flashing Blue LED

Post by noobs4u »

Starting just today I'm losing connectivity/power with the cloudshell2 on the XU4Q. Every 20 minutes it will stop working. The XU4Q has a solid red led and blinking blue led when it stops responding. The LCD is blank, the red lights that indicate power/activity for the HDD's are off and I lose SSH ability. However the lan port still blinks. I have to pull the power plug and plug it back in to get it working again. It happened the first time after completing my first ever backup of the OS. It's been happening ever 20min after a unplug/plugin since then. Any ideas on what is causing this sudden non-responsive behavior?

Which OS image do you run?
Can you check dmesg and syslog outputs to find a root cause?

Re: CloudShell2 XU4Q Stops Responding? Flashing Blue LED

Post by mad_ady »

The errors you point out seem to be "normal".
Did you do any updates before/after backup? Does the system become unresponsive despite the load? The kernel doesn't seem to be crashing...
If you don't have a serial port, here's what you can try...
- hook up a hdmi screen + keyboard and see if you have access before/after the problem.
If not,
- try flashing HK's ubuntu on a new sd card. Boot from it and see if it's stable
Or...
- try installing busybox with sudo apt install busybox
- on each boot run cp /bin/busybox /dev/shm
- create a script in /dev/shm/test.sh and make it executable, with this content

Code: Select all

#!/dev/shm/busybox sh
/dev/shm/busybox dmesg > /media/my-disk/stability.txt-`/dev/shm/busybox date "+%Y-%m-%d-%H-%M"
- add it to root's crontab and run it every minute with crontab -e

Code: Select all

* * * * * /dev/shm/busybox sh /dev/shm/test.sh
What this does is - suspecting a failing sd card - creates a temporary environment inside a ramdrive that should still work if the system is up, but with an unreachable rootfs...
Change the path to your disk in the script.

Quick question - does you CS2 still reply to ping when in this state?

    That could be a defective HDD (hard disk board) which short the voltage, remove both HDD's from the RAID controller board and restart the NAS, see if the XU4 works without disks, if not it's the RAID controller board itself

    I pulled the SD card, reformatted an eMMC from an older xu4 that I have and booted from it. It's running Ubuntu 20.04 5.4 Kernel and never shut down. Spent over an hour transferring data without incident. It was definitely a corruption issue on the sd card but I have no idea how or when it happened. A fresh install on the SD card proved successful as well and the xu4q ran without incident for 40min. I'll be keeping with the eMMC. I'm ordering a new one anyway. Still trying to perfect restoring backups to different eMMC/SD's for situations like this. Backups are successful but so far the restores have not. Separate topic though.
