CoreELEC is a ‘Just enough OS’ Linux distribution based on Kodi technology for popular Amlogic hardware.

Support for the Odroid C4 was added in CoreELEC version 9.2.2

The same netflix repo that worked on the N2 should work on the C4.

Hey guys,

Do you have problems with UPNP/SMB protocols?

When I try to skip some part of the video (sometimes 1 minute sometines 40), everything freezes for 1 minute and after that I the app go to the Main Menu of CoreELEC.

This is so frustrating, it should work, right?

This usually happens with 4k videos (20GB), but on other devices I can watch it clearly.

The latest one (9.2.4.2 (August 15th, 2020)

All OS works a bit strange... I'll try to record a video about this behavior, maybe my Odroid is broken or something...

Tested with HC4 CoreElec version 9.2.3.
It automatically updated to version 9.2.4.2.
It works fine. I haven't had much to test it, but I can confirm that your question is working.

Fully compatible with Petitboot as well. I <3 Petitboot. :D

Tested with HC4 CoreELEC version 9.2.4.2 running from uSD. I used a CoreELEC C4 image on HC4.
CoreELEC 9.2.4.2 works fine but fails to detect any SATA/SSD drives attached to HC4.

Latest Petiboot detects all my OS's from uSD(CoreELEC) and two(2) SSD drives(w/ HK Ubuntu-mate & Focal Fossa 20.04 LTS) without any issues.
CoreELEC 9.2.4.2 SMB and SSH services work just fine with HC4.
I only tested with 1080p MP4 videos my from NAS server via SSH and SMB.

Oh, I forget reply here...
I test another distro which also fails (arch linux) with a new SD card and works fine, so maybe was the Micro SD (was broken or was too slow).
Anyways... I don't remember if I tried with a nand and it was the same problems...

With Android it works like a charm, 4k from NAS (UPNP) and USB.

Thanks for the help!

I can confirm this problem.

I think they will make a new CoreElec for the HC4 that also includes a fan and oled display.

Although it is similar to C4, it contains different hardware. We may have been hasty. :)

As far as I heard, the latest nightly build supports the HC4 SATA hardware.
But I would like to wait several more days to get an official release.

BTW, is there any Kodi addons for basic NAS services like SMB and FTP server?

SMB is already included in CoreELEC and there is a ProFTPD add-on in the CoreELEC repo.

Also there is entware which is easily enabled by running the command:

Code: Select all

 installentware
This is a list of available entware packages:

I thought the preinstalled SMB was a client version. But it seems to support the server too.
Can you confirm the functionality of the SMB server?

Yes flash to SSD (dd)

Last week I dd to uSD, it worked fine. I took the image of a working Coreelec and mounted it on the SSD in my old way, but now it had the same errors I got. After a few tries I left this problem for later.
Now I dd to SSd, I was pretty sure it would work.
I got the same error, plugged SSD into USB3 adapter and plug in HC4's USB2 port, bingoo is working.

This is the situation.

Logically it should work, let me try it out later since my ODROID-HC4 is busy for something else.

Does the CoreELEC boot from SD using the Petitboot?

I am downloading the recent CoreELEC image anyway.

After having some research how CoreELEC works, I've some idea how to fix the issue that CoreELEC does not start from SSD. But I also need to test a bit with N2 as well in order to manage the code for the same feature. By when do you need to make CoreELEC runs on HC4?

This build should have booting from SSD or HDD on the HC4 fixed.
Thanks, I can confirm the nightly build can boot from SSD using the Petitboot. YaY

I have CoreELEC 9.2.5 installed and running on a micro-SD card and I would like to move the OS to a Solid State Drive. From previous comments on this post, I see that there is no SATA support in the current stable version of CoreELEC, so I am wondering what are my options here. I guess I will need to backup Kodi, perform a fresh install of the CoreELEC 9.2 nightly version on the SDD, and then restore Kodi in the new install, right? Is there a guide somewhere on how to flash the SSD/HDD? I installed CoreELEC on the micro-SD using Rufus (as per instructions on CoreELEC's website), so I guess I will need to plug the SSD into a desktop computer in order to flash it, but maybe there is a way to do it from Petitboot...

I flashed the Matrix version to the uSD.
I started the HC4 with CoreELEC in uSD product. The installation is complete, and it boots up on my CoreELEC HC4. I turned off the HC4 and opened the HC4 with Ubuntu.
With the Disks Program, I copied the CoreElec partitions on the uSD (consisting of two parts as CoreELEC and STORAGE) as images.
I created two new partitions for the CoreElec and Strage partitions to no avail on my SSD.
Then I copied the backup images to these sections.
I closed the HC4, removed the uSD card, rebooted the HC4, selected CoreElec from petitboot. CoreElec was running on SSD. That is all.

CoreElec 9.2.6 for Odroid C2, C4, HC4, N2 and N2+ is out:

introduces ZRAM support into the Linux kernel, which should dramatically improve the performance. ZRAM creates a compressed block device in RAM with on-the-fly disk compression

CoreELEC 9.2.6 adds support for the STK1160 analog TV tuner, improves booting from an ATA drive for the ODROID-HC4 Home-Cloud platform, improves 8K HEVC playback, and introduces the possibility to use the BBR TCP congestion control algorithm for improved networking.

This will have no effect on any of these devices as they have plenty of RAM already.

My N2+ is running CoreELEC and I use it constantly and only reboot when it updates, it's been up for 4 days currently and I'm sitting on 622MB used which is only 17% of the available RAM. On a 2GB device it would only be using 34% of available RAM.

zram can decrease performance, and only really gives you the ability to make ram stretch a little bit further if you are slightly memory constrained, and don't need the cpu performance that you give up by using it.

Most users don't need it.

However since it's possible to use docker on CoreELEC to run more stuff at the same time as kodi, I can see that maybe some users that like to really push the limits of what you can do with one device may find a use for it. So it's available if somebody wants to configure it, but off by default.

I agree, I've had issues with zram and compcache before that, if used lightly it can be of benefit in some circumstances of course . I don't understand why Android phones with tons of RAM have it enabled, years ago sure. I was one of the first to enable and use compcache on the original Moto Droid with my "Deprimed" kernel I maintained for Cyanogen Mod ROM...ah the good old days.

CoreELEC is so well optimized even on a 1GB device it would perform nicely I'm guessing.

While you are around could you tell me what is the status of CE19, would you say it's alpha?

Once in a while some excited user turns up on GitHub thinking they found some big secret that LE missed and proclaims ZRAM must be added to gain its magical benefits. However we've investigated this *thoroughly* at least twice, and debunked the myth (at least twice). In short, LE (and thus CE) already load optimally compressed images and run in RAM on all devices with more than 1GB ram, and while we've fiddled with the compression type over time it's been that way since about 2012. Forcing ZRAM almost always has a negative impact since you incur the overhead of working with compressed data which wasn't previously compressed. Ye olde swapfile is the other option, but that's not nearly as sexy as saying you have ZRAM in your system :)

"Officially" according to the developers that are taking the lead on the new version it's close to final release status.

I've been babysitting the 9.2 branch and working on some other future development, between dealing with winter weather. So haven't had to much time spent with this upcoming version.

Thanks, interesting that it's that far along. I'm quite happy with the current nightlies other than this persistent random issue where my screen will turn black momentarily while playing video. It has done this for months and doesn't happen a lot, have you ever experienced this strange bug on the N2+?

Kodi 19, didn't really change much, it has mostly been all about switching to python 3. So after we stuffed the Amlogic support back in, and updated it a bit, what we had was pretty close to being the same as Kodi 18. The kernel is also almost identical to the one used in the 9.2.6 amlogic-ng builds as well. So our biggest problem was trying not to glue our fingers together while assembling everything.

I've not personally experienced any similar issues, but I can try to recreate if you can provide some details.

There seems to be a few somewhat random little issues(possibly picked up in the last batch of updates from Amlogic.), that would be really nice to work out. However when things don't happen consistently, and don't happen for everybody, even with identical setups... It becomes a challenge to eradicate that sort of bug.

I wish I could reproduce it but like I said it's totally random and very well may be an issue with my specific TV, it does seem related to adjust display refresh rate because I don't believe it happens with that feature disabled.

It's nothing show stopping or even worth concern really, was just wondering if you had seen or heard of it before.

I need to do some research to see which plugins I use which aren't python 3 compatible.

Thanks for the support.
