HC4 Drive Adapter and Slot Cover

Post by hominoid »

3.5 inch drives work well in the cradle of the Odroid-HC4 but 2.5” drives are vulnerable IMO. There is no support for them and the 9.5mm HDD that I’ve tried all lean about 10 degrees regardless of the slot. SSD that have a lighter mass and different center of gravity might fair better. Regardless, one bump or brush is most likely to cause damage and easily break connectors IMO. The other potential issue is the collection of dust and other foreign debris in the open cradle and connector. Think of all those coin and cup holders, cellphone and other console nooks in your car. Luckily there is an easy solution that securely holds the drive and covers the opening.

The adapter is designed as friction fit with tight tolerances to eliminates any x-axis or y-axis lateral movement once installed. Included are 7mm and 9.5mm drive adapters and an empty slot cover stl file. Additional drive adapter sizes can be generated using the included OpenSCAD source files.

A great & practical solution for SSD/2.5" HDD users. It would be nice if HK will offer this as an official accessory anytime soon, considering not everybody owns or have access to a 3D printer.
I'd also loved it also if HK would've offered HC4 with a more beefy CPU like revised S922X @ 2.4Ghz.

This HC4 is a nice board, but I am puzzled by the design choice. I have put two 2.5" ssd in it, and it seems indeed very fragile and prone to accidents. I liked hc2 form factor much more.
Thanks to the op for this 3d models. My SSD are 7mm thick. Should I print the 7.5mm adaptator or the 9mm adaptator? Because there is a small area of 1-2mm between the hardrive and the case. With the 7mm adapter I am afraid it will press the drive against the case too much, and with the 9mm, I will still have a small slack between the drive and the case.

Use the same size as your ssd is thick. If they are 7mm use a 7mm, this way the ssd will be vertical with the adapter installed, as designed. The size can be changed at the beginning of the OpenSCAD file.

Code: Select all

// drive size
hdd_x = 70;
hdd_y = 100;
hdd_z = 9.5;  // typical ssd size 7mm and hdd 9.5mm
There are other case choices for the hc4. viewtopic.php?f=206&t=40769

I came here looking for exactly this, although i don't have a 3d printer :(
I think Odroid should offer an insert like this people can buy. I ended up buying a 2.5">3.5" case for my 2.5" SSD for convenience but I think these should be available to buy.

I bought a few of these 2.5" to 3.5" caddy's so my SSD's are easily removable on my pc's. I would think they would work well on the HC4. Only $7 on amazon :-)
