Best Linux Distro for Hardware Accelerated Video Playback?

Post by guyb »

I'm planning on using the ODroid N2+ for playing local 4k media via samba, 4k youtube, as well as browsing the web. Which linux distro would be easiest to get set up with hardware acceleration for Firefox and a video player like mpv?

Doesn't CoreELEC lack a web browser?

Right. No web-browser in the Kodi GUI.

Since there is no all-in-one OS image for your purpose, consider using a multi-OS boot function with Petitboot.

Is hardware accelerated video not available on general purpose distros? I thought that as of kernel 5.10 the mali gpu had support?

The Mali GPU works fine(with reasonable performance) for 3D OpenGL-ES APIs on the upstream kernel.
But 4K video play back is handled by another hardware accelerator (VPU).
The VPU driver development in the upstream kernel is still work-in-progress. It barely supports H.264 hardware decoding. There is no H.265 hardware decoding yet.
Nobody can't estimate when it will be available with a reasonable performance at this moment.

With the stock old LTS Kernel 4.9, you can play 4K video clips on the framebuffer via VPU H264/H265 hardware acceleration.

Oh, that's disappointing. Looks like I'll have to look into other sbc's - thank you for the information.

If you find an ARM SBC for your application, please share the SBC information.
