Petitboot

Post by Georgetina »

I am using an lcd screen with a resolution of 1360 x 768. I have a hdmi to vga converter and have success booting both Ubuntu Mate and Android. When I use petitboot my screen display "tears" and thus does not allow me to select the system I wish to run. Is it possible to edit/change petitboot to accept my screen resolution ?

Please try this, create a file "petitboot.cfg" in the first partition of your SD card with this.

Code: Select all

vga="1360x768p60hz"
And reboot as the SD card is attatched and boot select switch is still at "SPI".

EDIT: as @jonathon has adviced, please make sure you have the latest Petitboot after updating with "pb-update" in the command line of the Petitboot. Also if "vga=" does not work, try "hdmimode=" as well.

You can also try updating - 20201112 has better support for non-HD non-HDMI displays.

On my sd card I have the file petitbook.cfg. Should I modify this file with vga=1360x768p60hz and comment out the hdmi setting and should _ replace update=false with update=true ?

You already have? Why? How?
Anyway, yes...please modify the line with 1360x768p60hz and "update=" is not matter.
Once you find out the decent resolution for your display, I will let you know next to set it permanently.

When the display is unreadable again, you must be removed the SD card that has "petitboot.cfg"?
If the resolution works, please do run this from the command line of the Petitboot. From the Petitboot, select "Exit to shell".

Code: Select all

fw_setenv hdmi 1280x1024p60hz
This command will store the resolution to SPI flash memory and will load on booting, so you would not need to have "petitboot.cfg" in SD card if this command works properly. But please make sure if you use "hdmi" or "vga" with the resolution in the petitboot.cfg to display the Petitboot menu.

Hi I have tried the code you provided but the display still unreadable on reboot. Perhaps I have not added the code correctly ?. How do I "run from the command line" Is this before I "Exit to Shell" if so where is the command line.

Q1. are you able to see the screen if you have the 'petitboot.cfg' in SD card?
Q2. How did you run previously when you saying "added the code correctly?"? "Run the command line" means to select the menu "Exit to shell" from the Petitboot when you have a screen and USB keyboard is connected.

Q1 I am able to see the screen and it is stable and clear
Q2 I exit to shell and add the code fw_setenv hdmi 1280x1024p60hz and then press enter. Then I reboot the system with the boot switch set to SPI. The system boots and the petitboot display is unreadable in that the resolution selected is incorrect

Ok, then can you try again with fw_setenv vga 1280x1024p60hz?

What's the version of your Petitboot? And what do you have in the petitboot.cfg when you have the screen?
