HC4 VOC

Post by elatllat »

The HC4 is the first of the 6 Odroid SBC types that I have with a toxic Volatile Organic Compound smell.
A few hours sun bathing did not help.
Is it a different plastic than was used on the N2/C4?

I'll remove it from the case for further investigation...

I concur the smell, wouldn't have noticed had you not mentioned it.

After keeping the parts separate for 2 days;
  • the board is good,
  • the fan and OLED are OK,
  • the case, OLED wires, and feet are bad.
So I replaced the wires and banished the case.
I considered making a replacement but It works well without a case;
I just add a screw to attach the fan to the heatsync, and a wood block to space the drives.

I could smell the plastic mould injection lubricant from the case.
I don't think it is a toxic substance. But I have to agree the smell is bad.

We will contact our injection factory to ask what causes the smell.

I found several HC4 units on a desk in our office.
We built a test bench for a long time stability test several days ago and we could not feel any strange smell from them.
Therefore I think most of the smell seems to be gone within a few days.

@elatllat,
Please store the plastic shell in a ventilated place for a couple of days and check if it smells again.

After a week outside It's still bad.

Maybe dipping in a solvent,
bathing it in UV light,
or ozone would speed up the off gassing,
maybe it would destroy the plastic.

Like I said I'm happy with my solution of not using a case,
some may not be able to detect the odor (Because humans are highly vareable ranging from Anosmia to Hyperosmia, and we don't have cheap tools to quantify smell)
and odroid is informed,
so I'm just going to leave it at that.

Just received my unit. Took a long sniff and took a second one and I felt nothing. Either my unit doesn't have the smell or I need to take a covid test....

You may need to get tested, the smell isn't mild.

Well, other things still smell, but my HC4 doesn't, so I guess I'm lucky...

I do have a very acute sense of smelling being a perfume and cologne fanboy myself. However, I haven't noticed any weird smell on my HC4 casing whatsoever.

Perhaps it's only those that were at the beginning of the run.
