OGA BA - won't boot past HK logo

Post by fulior »

Hi,
I just assembled a new OGA BA, with no issues here, but I'm unable to successfully boot it with neither the official images nor Batocera. It gets to the HK logo, then the screen turns black (backlight is still on) and that's it. I tried different SD cards (one from my Odroid Go), tried flashing image on two PCs (using Balena) - no luck. Without the SD card I get the nice "No SD card" screen. I tried messing with boot.ini, got some errors so it means it's being read, then I did rename .dtb file and finally it booted up to Emulation Station welcome screen, from there I can't do anything, buttons don't work. Is there anything else that I could try? If the .dtb file breaks the boot process does it mean that something is wrong with the board?

Try letting it charge for an hour. The battery indicator in the picture shows a depleted battery. Of course, this may be due to user modifications of dtb.

You can also try running the button test:
1) Turn the device off.
2) Hold down L1+R1 while turning the device on.

I think battery is fine, I charged it for a few hours before first use, but just in case, I also tested it without a battery, connected only to charger.
I didn't know how to run the autotest, thanks! It did pass all the tests.

To further diagnose the issue, you will need to flash an unmodified official image:
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid_go_advan ... /ubuntu_es

Using the official image from an official download source establishes a "known good" environment. Use Etcher to flash and verify the compressed (xz) image to a SD card. This ensures the file was not corrupted or incomplete when downloaded.

Ensure the GO-Advance has been charged. Disconnect it from the charger and insert the SD card. Press the power button to start it. If the device continues to hang at the HK logo, observe the blue LED on the back of the device and report whether it is flashing. Also report the status of the red LED.

If the problem persists, repeat the above process with a different brand of SD card.

Using latest official image (unmodified) it stops after the HK screen. Fully charged battery (charging animation did stop), on power-on both red leds did turn on, then "charge" led turns off, blue led turns on until HK logo disappears. Then only power led remains. Tested with two different SD cards (32GB and 16GB from my Odroid Go). I've used Balena Etcher.

This likely means the kernel has panicked. A UART cable would be required to obtain the log output. Someone at HardKernel will need to advise you further.

Please try EmuELEC 3.7 image just in case.
viewtopic.php?f=193&t=37516

If it shows the same result, your board might have a hardware problem.
In that case, please contact "odroid at hardkernel dot com" with a URL of this thread.
They will help you if you purchased the device from our web-store directly.
Otherwise, contact your local distributor/reseller.

BTW, did you use a 5V/2A charger?

I did test EmuELEC 3.7 before, unfortunately with the same results. Yes, I'm using 5V/2A, but could this be charger related if I was able to boot the OS when I modify boot.ini to not use .dtb files?

It is really hard to know without serial raw console output why your board could boot only when you didn't load a dtb file.

Do you have a UHS-1 grade micro-SD card?
