Media Player

Post by CasperRebel »

Hi all,

I'm sorry to post this because I know there are probably about a million other posts that have used an XU4 to create a media player, but when I say I'm a true novice it might be easier to say that I don't have a linux box to call my own (closest thing I got is this xu4).

I have a storage drive full of music and videos but I'd also like the option to stream youtube or other websites (youtube doesn't seem to be the problem so much as Netflix); I understand I could start with a regular desktop and just run Kodi. I remember reading a project somewhere on here about being able to route internet by usb through a cell phone which is something I'd like to incorporate because I think it would be much easier than trying to install some kind of mobile network interfacing thingy (did I mention I'm a novice?), but I think that was for an Android distro?

Any advice/suggestion/pigeon-feeding of code is fully appreciated

If your mobile phone supports a USB tethering mode, it should work as a normal network device.
Any modern Ubuntu/Debian based OS should be plug-n-play with an Android mobile phone at least.

I'm planning on installing it in my car, so I'll have a dedicated phone unit for it; you mean to tell me that I can just usb connect an Android phone and use it for internet/wifi capabilities?

Do you run Android OS on your XU4?
We need to check whether current Android OS has a USB tethering driver or not.

After connecting your Android phone to your XU4, you need to activate the tethering feature in Android settings first.
Then you can see a network connection option in the Ubuntu network manager settings.

For a car media player you'd best go with Kodi. It has some plugins that support youtube and netflix.
