UN- SOLVED: Add N2 repositories to CORELEC

Post by Gerry »

Hi all,
I have CoreElec running KODI on my C2 perfectly with impressive performance.

As the C2 has more power I like to add some more mainstream applications to CoreElec. However, CoreElec is very limited there.
They use a packaging system I'm not familiar with and the repository defined is very limited and does not contain those packages I need (e.g . JAVA, wiringPI, openhab, …)
The gents over at CoreElec where nice and friendly , but did not see the need and therefore were of little help.

Changing to another distribution like UBUNTU, ARMBIAN is no option as long as they do not bring GPU HW acceleration with. (I'm not able to compile KODI with HW acceleration for the N2 cause knowledge is missing)

Now the idea was to add the repos of HK/Odroid somehow manually to CoreElec. Does anybody have an idea how to achieve this ?
I started with:
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:hardkernel/ppa
But not even 'apt ' is present on CoreElec ?

I appreciate any help and also any hint how to get mainstream applications and KODI with HW GPU accl. to work.

Thank
Gerry

Since the CoreELEC is not a Debian based OS, you can't use any apt command on that directly.
I think you need to use a Docker add-on on the CoreELEC to install and run some .deb packages.

But I have no experience of using Docker.
I hope other experts can help you.

Thank your very much for your resposnse.

I wasn't aware that CoreElec wasn#t based on DEBIAN. That is an important information.
So likely not the way to go.

Will GPU accl. be included in mainline N2 UBUNTU ? ( I'm not in a hurry...)

Or is there a bulletproof simple installation guide to add it somehow. (No compilation)

Thanks
Gerry

The GPU driver was enabled in @tobetter's mainline image.
But the VPU driver can handle only 1080p/H.264 codecs as far as I know.

Because of our very limited Kodi knowledge, our Kodi build quality is always very far from the CoreELEC.
Consider trying a containerized Debian docker on the CoreELEC or a dual-booting method with Petitboot.

SOLVED: Add N2 repositories to CORELEC

To whom it may help:
I managed to get it running by using 'DIETPI' image for the N2 and their installation procedures for KODI.
Got KODI with full GPU acc. and 'JAVA' running at the same time which was impossible with CoreElec.

That will be my way to go ahead.
Thanks for any help here.

Could you tell me where installation directions for Kodi are. I looked at the DietPI site and checked the forum tutorials

Well, its not that easy.

"DietPI" uses a own build installation script utility with a simple, but effective GUI.( "dietpi-software")
This uses "apt ..." in the background.

I used this utility to install KODI. I could watch the apt... commands issued but they vanished so quickly that I was unable to follow.
AFAIK, there is no log of the installation, but I may check if you like.

Somewhere in the backyard, these apt's must lie, but at a first glance, I wasn't able to find them.
The scripts also are likely to find within the repository on DIETPI's Github.

I'm not that expert on DIETPI nor LINUX at all to find the details. If I can assist somehow, just let me know.

About my DIETZPI KODI installation as of now:
- JAVA 8 running perfectly. (V11 also )
- KODI running with ~ 30 % CPU ('top') when displaying a FULL HD video

I'm now perfectly happy with my brand new N2 and will now move my installations from my C2 one by one:
- openhab2
- mosquitto
- tomcat
- duplicati
- syncthing
- samba
- rclone

Thanks again !

Ok, folks,
I must revise my opionion about "DIETPI".

The core problem with DIETP is the kernel version 4.9 which makes it not very feasible for KODI as lots of TV cards are not supported e.g. my HAUPPAUGE WINTV DualHD
Model 01590.

Overall its a hassle:
- "DIETPI" gets KODI running perfect, but the TV card is not working due to the old kernel.
- "ARMBIAN" gets TV card running due to their later kernel ( 5.3), but KODI is not running with GPU accecelaration.
- "CoreElec" gets both working, but is unable to add additional DEBIAN based software packages

The problem is also discussed in this thread viewtopic.php?t=37166
So everything back to start ...

Does nobody have a N2 with latest DEBIAN kernel and GPU acceleration and KODI working ?

I'm rather desperate with my new N2 here ...

Thanks
Gerry

You are missing the point. CoreELEC supports docker and entware. CoreELEC is very raw and focused on media center use. But we also (currently internally) have open mediavault and other services through docker working. Of course it depends what you want or need. But all sources are open and free just build your own debian based system.
