A shot in the ARM...

Post by venkatbo » Wed Jun 10, 2020 2:21 am

Looks like Apple just announced they will be dumping Intel CPUs and migrating (for laptops) to their powerful family of ARM chips (some used in their iPhones/tablets)... May be, good news in general for the ARM families of CPUs and SOCs...

Shame it's Apple and not Dell, or some other big player that has Linux support.

It will be good since a lot of software will now target ARM64 that didn't originally.

I can see being able to run things like Photoshop natively in the near future.

Not again :( I still have a Snow Leopard VM that I use very occasionally to run PowerPC software via Rosetta...

... just when Intel announced the 3D (stackable) CPU architecture, targeting some of the ARM based handhelds and laptops...

Samsung and Microsoft already have ARM64 laptop offerings with 16 GB RAM.

The difference though is those don't have desktop level processing.

The "laptops" (MacBookAir?) Apple will put ARMs in also won't have desktop (MacPro) level processing. I think most MacBookAir users are not really in need of more CPU speed, but more battery should help. Apple put a big cache on their Arm chips to make them fast, should be interesting, there was an Arm in MacBook rumor 5 years ago ... hope it pans out soon.

When I said desktop I really meant x86 level performance, such as an ULV core i7 or a mid-tier desktop CPU.

Interesting...

However, it's probably better to NOT buy Apple if you like open source and/or open hardware. It's about as closed as you can get.
