cannot burn image into emmc

Post by jalcaid001 » Thu May 14, 2020 8:13 am

I use etcher and 6.0.1 android
It tells me the image is not bootable
Image name is selfinstall-odroidc2-eng-s905_6.0.1_master-122-v5.7.img.xz

What is wrong? I didn't see anything about it here https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-c2/getti ... tion_guide

You can ignore it, just proceeding the flashing. Since the self-install image does not have any partition itself but will be created once the installation is done. The Ether is not aware of how it works.

Thanks

I flashed the image and tried to boot it

Now I am in Android Recovery mode. Is this normal?
Which option should I use? I'm thinking 'Mount /system'

I get the same but just press continue.

Try use sd formatter to format the emmc before flashing the firmware.

Try reflash again, insert the emmc onto the board and power up, the image should boot into android.

There was not an option to continue. The first option was to 'Enter in Recovery mode' (don't remember, I'll look again next time)
However I left it, system went back to its state (old 5.1.1, my same apps, etc)

I reformatted with SD formatted (https://www.sdcard.org/)

I flashed the image again
After rebooting, what I saw is a message saying 'System Update'. And the card is stucked in HardKernel logo

On Etcher, I saw a message saying 'Falsh Complete, 1 Failed device, Checksum doesn't match for range [0, 1107296255]'. This is the space the uncompressed image takes. Does this mean teh emmc was bad?

There should be no error on Etcher if flashing and validation process were fine.
Which card reader did you use?

Compare the md5sum value too to check if your downloaded OS image is okay or not.

I got 6.1.1 image. Checksum is fine on my laptop

CertUtil: -hashfile command completed successfully.

I use this reader
https://ameridroid.com/products/emmc-adapter
Connected to a generic SD to USB adapter

That Odroid had been unstable for a while (had to reboot it many times). Is this indication of something?

For sure, do you mean that your eMMC boots "old 5.1.1" after flashing the same eMMC with "new 6.0.1" image? If so, I doubt your eMMC is not flashed.
Are you able to boot with your eMMC and can edit boot.ini with your PC? If so, please try this.

That is my thought also, the flashing did something, perhaps flash part of the card.
This is why I went into recovery mode before going to 5.1.1

Then I used SD formatted and try to flash it again. I guess it flashed also only part of the card, because I'm stucked with the hardkernel logo

The link you told me is for when you can boot to Android, that it's not my case

No, the link is the instruction on how you can flash the image to your eMMC from PC without eMMC card reader. So if you follow the instruction, at least you can boot up, ODROID-C2 will be attached as a USB Storage to PC using USB cable. Since you are using the old eMMC adapter using SD card reader, just in case who knows the flashing is failed while your eMMC is fine.

Not all USB micro SD readers can correctly write to an eMMC, it sounds like what you may be experiencing.

I just tried to connect my Windows laptop to the micro USB port on the C2. I don't see any drive.

The boot.ini is in the first partition of your eMMC and in order to follow up the instruction in the previous post, you can edit the file with your PC after attaching your eMMC to your eMMC card adapter and USB card reader.

I think your change is correct and for some reason, Windows cannot access your eMMC with ODROID-C2.
I suspect your eMMC is corrupted or Window is not happy to mount ODROID-C2.

Thanks for the guidance.

I also have an ordoid X4. Is there a way of connecting the C2 it via microUSB to the XU4? And mount it on the XU4? And flash the image from the XU4?

If you have Linunx OS for XU4, it's worth to try to connect your ODROID-C2 to XU4. Or you can boot ODROID-XU4 from uSD after attaching the eMMC from ODROID-C2, flash OS image on XU4 with the command dd.

Hmm.. I think I did something bad
I connected the C2 to my XU4 and I saw /dev/sda /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sda3 /dev/sda4

by mistake I did 'dd <RETURN>' and Ctrl+C 0.5 seconds later
Now I cannot see any /dev/sda? on my XU4 (no matter what usb drive I introduce, no matter if I reboot). What I did wrong in the XU4 and how can I recover?

I don't think you made wrong to XU4 if you just run "dd" command. Are you able to see any USB devices connected to the host ports with "lsusb" ?

Oh well.. the XU4 needed a hard reboot (for some reason a software reboot was not enough)
Now I can see other drives, but not the emmc on the odroid C2. Perhaps I messed it by doing a partial dd ?

Simple "dd" command without a parameter does not make any change. Aren't you able to see /dev/sda, but not /dev/sda1 or so? If you can see /dev/sda at least, I believe eMMC on ODROID-C2 can be flahsed from your ODROID-XU4.

For sure, /dev/sda should the eMMC, not your another USB stick or HDD.

I was not able to see anything when connecting the C2 as USB

I bought a Transcend RDF5 https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Transcend-T ... 779&sr=8-1
With this USB adaptor, I was able to see one USB drive, but without disk. Not SD cad formatter nor Etcher would detect it

to my surprise, I retried my old generic chinese usb adaptor. SD card formatter worked, and Etcher flashed the image without problems
I reboot the C2 with that emmc. I saw the 'installing update' message, and then back to the Hardkernel logo

You still think the emmc is good?

So I guess it's a mystery right now
If I try to replace the emmc would any emmc card work?
