Dual-booting Ubuntu from eMMC and Android from SD

Post by invenis » Sun May 03, 2020 9:18 am

Hi!

Is it possible to have Ubuntu on eMMC and Android on SD card and select the system to boot in the Petitboot menu?
Ubuntu will be my primary system and I want to have it on eMMC.
I don't want to remove the eMMC card to run Android from the SD card. It's uncomfortable and I'm afraid that eventually the contacts on the eMMC card/slot will wear out.
Can Petitboot handle this situation?
I read somewhere on the forum that Petitboot can't boot Android from an SD card - is that still true?

Thank you.

No, that's resolved...I think...The latest version of the Petitboot is 2020024.

Some users have difficulty having the screen with some 4K TV/monitor, otherwise, it will work.

I checked yesterday. I installed Ubuntu on eMMC and Android (Lineage 16.0 from Vodik) on SD. Petitboot showed both systems correctly on its list. Unfortunately, after choosing Android, the screen turned black and then the HardKernel logo appeared permanently.

Unfortunately, due to the limitation of KEXEC, Petitboot cannot boot Android directly.
The feasible use case is that assuming you install Android to eMMC, place the boot select switch to MMC and this will bring Android from eMMC. With the same setup, you can install Ubuntu and Debian to SD card[s] and set boot select switch to SPI then Petitboot will show you the OS in the SD card. By selecting the one in the boot entry, you can go for the OS. In Petitboot, whenever you change the SD card, it will refresh the installed OS even USB storage is possible to boot from.
So I have to install Android on eMMC, right? Maybe I should change something in the Petitboot configuration to run from SD?

Try android on emmc. Linux can survive on sd just fine.

I have exactly the same issue like invenis - I have reported this in LineageOS topic.

Important to mention is that it was working without issues for months until recent Android upgrade. It seems that there was a change (maybe related to split to boot.ini and env.ini) which produces isses for Pettitboot.

This is the reason why I stepped back from latest LineageOS to apha0.2 version and dual boot simply works.

Hi, I just want to report back - with newest Pettitboot, dual (im my case tripple) boot works again.

I have tested it with CoreElec on emmc, LineageOS (beta 2) on sd card and Retro Arena on usb. All 3 OS-es are correctly recognised and booting OK via Pettitboot.
