Coax digital out (dolby digital AC3 and DTS)

Post by Eso Rimmer » Thu May 07, 2020 3:22 am

Hi, I'm running C4 with KODI and I'm wondering if I can get caoaxial digital audio output from the C4, so I can pass through the sound to my Logitech Z-5500 speakers which have coaxial input.

Is it possible to just take 2 pins wire out of the 7pin GPIO or 40pin GPIO and solder it to cinch plug?
If so, which pins should I use? Is the layout same as on Odroid C2? I didn't find the layout on wiki.

I know there is expansion some 40USD module with optical out, but I would prefer the cinch, because my speakers have both digital cinch and SPDIF and the SPDIF already goes from my TV.

No. An adapter board is required to buffer the signal, decouple, and level shift it for coax.

I see. That's pity. So my only option is this board with optical out I guess: https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/hifi-shield-2/

There are a few TV boxes with SPDIF build-in, but those can be problematic from software support perspective and you again didn't get much further. I have many boards around and only one with SPDIF ... Cubietruck, which is too old for this job.

There are some USB sound cards with SPDIF which might also be just good enough. I used to use one of those for this purpose in the past. Also for driving similar sound system.

We will make a proto sample early next week something like this and share the test result with instruction.

The Toslink optical SPDIF connector seems to be several dollars include shipping cost.

C4 also can use a Toslink connector for optical SPDIF output.
