Odroid XU4 new (blue) vs old (grey) Active Cooler

Post by raffaele.villa » Sat May 02, 2020 8:02 pm

Hi everybody,
some years ago I bought an Odroid XU4 and, despite the little annoying loud from the Fan, I never try to search for alternative solutions.
Now I start to use it as a media center for my bedroom television and the loud from the fan results to be a little too annoying.
My XU4 mount the original grey heatsink (https://hd2.tudocdn.net/447394?w=660&h=507), but I see that now it is sold with a new blue heatsink under the Fan (https://cdn.hardkernel.com/wp-content/u ... eOffer.jpg).
I don't find any information about that, so, my question is: there is any difference between the two heatsinks (better heat dissipation, lower noise, etc) or it is just a "colour" difference without any real improvement?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Raffaele

I think it's just a different anodizing.

For passive look for the tall blue heatsink and turn your xu4 into a xu4q

I take a look at it but I'm not so sure. It is really enough if I would use the XU4 as Mediacenter? Are there any issue?

I haven't used xu4 as a media player and can't really say. The big heatsink provides some cooling, but less than the fan, so it might thermal throttle. It's not advised to go over 1600MHz with passive cooling (there's a huge topic by hominid about cooling the xu4), but if your media is hardware decoded (e.g. h264) it shouldn't be an issue. H265 is software decoded on xu4 and stresses the cpu.
You could add a noctua fan on top of that cooler (5V).

If using the XU4 as a media center you definitely want the passive heatsink, the fan is way too noisy.

I've only had my XU4 for a couple weeks but use it daily at a distance of a few feet due to the 7" screen and often for hours. There must be some inconsistencies with fans, mine is barely noticeable, like I have to be literally on top of it to hear it and even then it's not remotely unpleasant.
I figured it was PWM whine everyone writes about and planned on clipping it with a capacitor but never bothered.
Perhaps being brand new something was changed in software recently and I got the revised version?

True, not a fans are created equal, but it may also be a question of age and ear sensitivity.

Yeah, I thought of sensitivity too, long ago my best friend would get headaches from a pair of tweeters in my car, they only bothered him, nobody else.
Come to think of it he's curious in a couple ways, can't touch both terminals on a car battery without getting shocked.

Sensitivity to the XU4 fan isn't usually like that, it's noisy to most people. Especially the chirp it makes during startup due to PWM or when you run it at certain speeds.

Be glad you got a quiet one :)
