Problem with forum

Post by Gburas » Tue Apr 28, 2020 7:38 pm

Hi ,
@hardkernel there is problem with forum: when clicking directly group "Hardkernel" it asks for password, on web page it`s not a big problem but when using Tapatalk i can`t go thru (because there i cant go directly to eg. "introduce Yourself"), i don`t know it is only me or others have it to.
When it will solved You can delete this topic.

I also recently encountered some issues with the forum.

All posts were marked as unread, even the ones I've seen.
I took the time to go through most of the posts again, and mark them as read where I was already done with it.
Then when I came home and logged in from another computer everything was unread again.

That makes it very hard to determine what posts are new and which are not.

We've been aware those issues from a couple of days ago.
We will try to find root causes and solutions.

I think we need to upgrade five+ years old server hardware as well as software.

This problem has solved. Someone who has permission admin had changed the configuration to ask for a password. And it went back.

From about a month the forum has been attacked by DDos and it still keeps going. so I changed some configuration to prevent the attack. One of them is to disable server-side topic marking.
I think the change makes that situation. And I also changed back to the enable even it could be a load more to the system since it is not clear to me relate to the attack.

If there is nothing back to before, please let me know.

I don't think changing settings on PHPBB itself can help here a lot.
It's more practical to catch these attacks before they reach the target itself.
Apache has some tools that might prevent these kind of attacks.
Try to read up on libapache2-mod-security2 and libapache2-mod-evasive

You should also put things like "fail2ban" in place.
Which can monitor invalid requests or login attempts, or even do rate limitings.
https://www.maketecheasier.com/fail2ban ... ache-ddos/
It probably takes a while to configure it correctly but it's probably a better solution, than just trying to block them directly on the forums, when they are already "on the system".

Regarding the ddos attack you're seeing - is it volumetric with garbage traffic (e.g. udp port 80?) or is it application specific? E.g. automated queries to the search or other fake queries? Depending on attack type there are some countermeasures you can try - like fail2ban if they're trying to bruteforce accounts, or some tool to rate-limit connections (or something insidious like tar pit)...
Let us know if you need help - either here or privately.

Yes, right. changing settings on PHPBB didn't take any help. so have installed and been running ModEvasive as Apache module. but, It is also couldn't help a lot.

It is an apache application-specific port 80 and 443 port DDos attack. They make many connections to the forum in a sec in changing IP addresses and got a load to the CPU.
This pattern keeps going on every 4 ~ 5 minutes.

And now, It is running I made a simple script based on a firewall under the system and it works better than I thought. It's very simple and there needs to be updated.
I guess the script is very initial of 'fail2ban' you guys recommended. ;)
I think fail2ban is a good solution. And on the other hand, trying to find better solutions.

As long as it's not volumetric, you can probably deal with it.
Fail2ban only tries to slow down brute force attempts to crack logins (ssh, http, etc). It won't help you in this case.

Based on the description you're either a victing of a SYN flood (opening too many connections), or a slowloris attack (keeping too many slow connections open at a time). SYN flood is easier and cheaper to create, for slowloris you need to have a botnet with legitimate clients at your disposal (so it's more expensive for the attacker).
To find out if it's a SYN flood you can query netstat -tpan | grep :80 | grep SYN | wc -l. If the number is high (can't say what high means to you, but over 1-200) you could be under SYN flood attack. Here you can see some hardening options: https://blog.litespeedtech.com/2013/07/ ... ou-can-do/. In order to mitigate the SYN flood you'd need a different box that can handle the SYN requests and can do some mitigations (these are based on what commercial anti-ddos products do)- like:
* drop the first SYN request and see if it is retransmitted - then allow it to your server
* reply to the SYN request but with wrong ACK number. If they receive a TCP RST, then the source is not spoofed and subsequent traffic for that host will be allowed to your server
* reply to the SYN request and set up a connection. Use HTTP 302 to do a redirect to a temporary URL that points to your server. This validates that the client can understand HTTP
* set up a connection and serve javascript code that does the redirection to the real server. This validates that the client uses a browser and not some wget/curl.

If you suspect you have a slowloris attack (lots of ESTABLISHED sessions but very little network traffic), here are some ideas for mitigation: https://www.funtoo.org/Slowloris_DOS_Mitigation_Guide

Anyway - you should invest time to measure (graph) all these parameters - either collected from netstat, or iptables. Things like number of TCP sessions, number of ESTABLISHED TCP sessions, number of SYN, FIN, FIN_WAIT, etc sessions, number of httpd processes. Monitor also other systems in the data path - starting with the router toward your ISP (traffic, packets per second, number of fragmented packets, sessions (if it supports sessions), interface errors, delay between the router and an exit router in your ISP's network), any load balancers (things like connections, memory, packets per second) and your end server(s). Databases too need to be monitored - things like concurrent connections, number of queries per second, slowest/average query time. It will help you better understand what has changed when you are under attack. It pays off to be prepared for the next one...

Are you sure it's actually an attack? This forum is quite busy with visitors especially since the C-19 outbreak.

I'm guessing it takes about 5 minutes for an astute reader to finish a thread page and load the next, at least in Tapatalk. Couple that against hundreds of people simultaneously that is quite a bit of load.

Only graphs can tell. Not sure how you can measure "idle" viewers, who are just reading the page. Might be possible via phpbb because it reports how many users are on the forum at any time...

Also - thanks to rooted - here is a suggestion. You may want to skip the upcoming Odroid C19. It may not be welcome to the public...

If it's just a DoS fail2ban like actions work well,
but if it's a SynFlood or DDoS,
one option is to make a script to collect the IPs of authenticated users from the database backend of phpbb and make a b-tree whitelist in iptables.
Paying for someone else to take care of it is another option https://www.cloudflare.com/ddos/ .

There are so many better ways to backup
The easiest is to use LVM2 so that the entire filesystem can be transparently "snapshot" for backup without disruption to live processes.

yah that's listed in the last link I posted,
one would still want to rsync the snapshot with nice/ionice/bwlimit (zfs is more efficient then rsync but more complex).
Doing any of those things on a slave just makes it harder to break production.

I'd expect all web browsers to have a window.localStorage but maybe it's a problem with the code being served.
In Chromium (not Firefox) there are 10 calls to https://emoji.tapatalk-cdn.com/emoji*.png with status 403 so that's bad.
Worse is the lighthouse score of 50%;

actually we do.. like all the time.
developers, project managers, system administrators, supporter, etc.
and since HR is constantly stealing my cookies I have leverage :D
Donate to support my work on the ODROID GameStation Turbo Image for U2/U3 XU3/XU4 X2 X C1 as well as many other releases.
Check out the Games and Emulators section to find some of my work or check the files in my repository to find the software i build for ODROIDs.
If you want to add my repository to your image read my HOWTO integrate my repo into your image.
