Unread post by Eyeball37 » Fri Mar 13, 2020 7:02 pm

Hi all,

Anybody know if there is a log describing all differences between the 1.0 and 1.1 versions of the newly uploaded base image by @crashoveride.

Thanks,

Thanks @crashoveride is updating a reflash or anyway to update an existing base image? Are any new consoles added for emulation and finally is the charging light now displayed when the device is off but connected to power source?

Thanks for all your work on this great device

That's based now on X11 with GBM/X11 (?) Mali user space libraries, why this ? Easier with rotation ?

I can't do anything with WiFi it seems, I just have a menu entry with empty connections and from there I can do nothing :(

And why you didn't wait for Ubuntu 20.04, all Ubuntu x.10 are buggy, the x.04 versions are the stable once and 20.04 will be LTS !

Updating is a reflash. The new release is a major step towards enabling incremental updates in the future.

    Yes, flycast (Dreamcast) was added.

The most recent uboot at time of publication is used. That question is better answered by HardKernel since I do not maintain uboot.

X11 is not used. The environment remains unchanged from the previous release (KMS/DRM/GBM).

I have tested that WiFi works with the HardKernel WiFi Module 0. Other adapters may require kernel drivers or be affected by kernel version. HardKernel mains the Linux kernel (apt update/install), so this is better answered by them.

The 19.10 release was used because it offered improvements in GCC and LIBC6. I have noticed that some emulators such as SNES9X run faster than on the previous version. This change also allows binary compatibility with some of the other game distros using this newer C runtime. The Ubuntu 19.10 release is considered stable but without long term support. Adopting 19.10 now makes it easier to transition to 20.04 when its released.

      @crash

Ah ok, you will move to 20.04 either way, good to hear :)

No wlan didn't work, I had to do it via command line first delete my connection with nmcli con delete <SSID> and then add it with nmcli dev wifi connect <SSID> password <password> it didn't work out via nmui, maybe add user odroid to systemd-network and netdev group ? just a wild guess, I really don't know why it didn't work I also use WiFi Module 0

When a WiFi connection does not work, it usually means the password was not entered correctly. The 'nmui' tool can not currently detect this condition. The solution is to delete the connection and re-add it paying extra attention to the password entry.

AreaScout: I'm running this image successfully and can confirm wifi works. I went the nmcli way though: disable emulationstation.service then hookup a keyboard, ctrl-alt-F2 to switch tty's, login then use nmcli dev wifi connect <ssid> password "<passphrase>".

add it with nmcli dev wifi connect <SSID> password <password>
If you search the log file, you will see that nmui issues the exact same command (note [REDACTED] is an edit by me).

        Code: Select all

COMMAND: nmcli device wifi con "AreaScoutHeadQuater" password [REDACTED]

A guess may be that the "$" in the password may be getting treated as a BASH variable. However, the nmui behavior was not changed from the previous image. If it worked there, it should work on the new image too.

I didn't test the last image, I only had the one came on SD card in use, I would recommend to use single quotes instead of double, because on command line I did single quote the SSID and password and that worked

The WiFi implementation worked fine for me. I do have a question though, where are the scraped images stored? I couldn't seem to find them and had to re-scrape everything.

Also I was wondering why the decrease in shutdown speeds? Was the device not properly stopping everything previously? I did wonder how it could shutdown so quickly.

          I do not know! :D
It should be the same behavior as regular EmulationStation and likely depends on the script used to scrape. The destination is probably somewhere in /home/odroid (perhaps a hidden folder).

My device shutdown is as fast as before. If there is a delay, it may be SD card related. Try:

          Code: Select all

          sudo fstrim -v /
Other possibilities include that linux may be doing a 'lazy' format at the time.

I did actually change from the card Hardkernel sent to a 32GB Samsung EVO Select when I flashed this new image, it would be interesting if it's that since the Samsung is as fast or faster than the 16 GB SanDisk.

I will try flashing the SanDisk to verify. The Samsung card takes between 4 and 8 seconds to shutdown and 12 to 14 seconds to start. Not really a problem as I'm not that impatient, just something I noticed.

If you have the USB serial console cable, the console may provide additional insight into what is occurring.

          Hi,

In the release note of the base image v1.1, it is mentioned "SRAM save/load support". What dies it mean?

          Thank you.

"SRAM" (static random access memory) in this context means anywhere an emulated system may store data. For older generation game systems, this was physically a SRAM chip with a battery backup. For newer systems, it applies to flash/EEPROM storage such as memory cards in PS1 and Dreamcast.

The feature that was added means this peristent data is now saved and loaded in a file separate from the emulation state. This allows for game saves to be portable across systems other than GO Advance.

never got to use the image or the one before, as wifi wont start...same wifi stick used with batocera without issues.

What is wrong? I add my wifi, password, activate...but no wifi connection? never.

Does your SSID or password have any non-alphanumeric (anything other than a letter or number) characters in it? A possible issue with using "$" has been identified but not yet confirmed.

In other OS my pwd works...?

Anyway, before changing my pwd just for OGA and then having to change it for all connected appliances, I just upload roms directly to the SD which works, but slow. Btw, where do the BIOS go, directly in the associated ROM folder?

Btw, where do the BIOS go, directly in the associated ROM folder?
When using an emulator that requires a BIOS, a message is displayed indicating what file is required and where it should go if the BIOS is not already present.
