[SOLVED] Power Issues on OGA / Not Charging and Wont power on without dc jack plug in

Post by Thens » Mon Feb 24, 2020 4:10 pm

Greeting, I have assemble OGA, so I haven't got to the point of flashing the microSD so I don't Know about software part yet.

So the problem is when completely assemble I try to power the OGA but doesnt boot at all ( 3 led - charge/alive/power not lighten )

I can boot to 'no micro Sd' Screen only with DC jack plugged in to power supply adapter ( 5V = 2A ), I can boot with or without Battery connected.

So here I sent you some video of Volt measurement before and after DC jack plugged in and Foto of Battery Volt Measurement.

is it the issue on the battery unit ? or main board ?
how do we charge the battery, do we have to charged the battery when the unit is energized ( without auto shut off when "no micro SD" screen pop up short while the units shut down all 3 LED turn off )

thank you

Remove the battery and check the LEDs status and let us know the result.

BTW, I couldn't download your video clip due to uncertain firewall in our office.
I will check it later once I'm home tonight.

I have removed battery and the condition still the same after power on to no Micro SD card screen then auto shut off and all 3 LED off.

Currently Iam using adapter for phone charging where output is = 9V or 5V, I will find 5V adapter and let you know again

Your laptop or generic PC USB ports should be fine for testing the OGA power circuit functionality.

Can you measure the voltage of input and output capacitors of NCP372 to narrow down root causes?
Please look into schematics page 24.
https://dn.odroid.com/ODROID_GO_ADVANCE ... rev1.0.pdf

One Korea user reported the USB-DC cable was defective. :(

P2 label on the 10pin female header is GND.
Measure the voltage between "DC IN" test pad near the U6 IC and the GND first.
And measure the voltage between "DC OUT" test pad and the GND.

BTW, push the DC plug slightly more. You might hear a click sound once the plug is fully inserted too.

Must the Odroid Go Advance be powered on before it can charge? Mine charges only when it is powered on. If I shut it down, it does not charge (charging LED not lit).

@TFMeouch
I think so too but my understandment on the wikipedia says that it should be lighten the led charge even it is not turned on(correct me if iam wrong)

@Admin/Odroid
Attach is the measurement of the
1. dc in and dc out (after the screen *no SD Card”- all led off) = 5.14 volt
2. Dc in and dc out (when the unit boot to “no sd card” screen- 3 LED lighten) = 4.94 volt
I think there ia nothing wrong since in and out is the same dC voltage

Note. I use 5volt adapter(VIDVIE brand)

The input power rails looks fine.
Once the "No SD Card" message on the LCD disappears in several seconds, the LEDs will turn off.
So your test results look okay.

Connect the battery and check the LED status again.
If the battery was deep discharged, you might need to wait around 20~30 minutes for trickle charging.

If it doesn't help, you already did as much as you could.
Please contact "odroid at hardkernel dot com" with a URL link of this post.
They will help you if you purchased the board from our web-store directly.
Otherwise, contact your local distributor/reseller.

So I tried charging it without energized the system (after no sd card screen auto off) about 1 and half hour. Still nothing. pull dc jack and try without it, but system cannot boot(no power at all)

then I install system with batocera, try to charge the battery with energized system ( all working normal 3 led lighten) - attached is the video. but then after 1 and 1 hour and half, i pulled DC jack try to power up without it and still nothing unit cannot boot.

I check the voltage measurement when charging ( at dc in dc out 4.9Volt) and (at positive negative pad near battery connector 3.9Volt)
So now what seems to be the problem ?

Can you keep measuring the voltage of the battery?
It must be 4.2Volt once it is fully charged. It may take up to 2.5 hours.
That will narrow down root causes. If it can reach near 4.2Volt, the battery cell and the charger circuitry must be fine at least.

ok I've charged it with system energized about 2 and half hour, but still couldn't not energize the system withou dc jack plugged in.

measurement :
1. at DC pad in and DC pad Out = 5Volt
2. At positve and negative Pad near battery connector = 3.999 / 4 Volt ( never change even after continous charge more than 3 hour)

enclosed the pict

Ah.. I think some portion of the charging circuitry seems to be broken.
Please proceed the RMA process as I told you in previous comments.

(update) - Already sent the email regarding rma
ok RMA is ok but just to be clear, I don't feel happy imagining about extra cost. you know its almost buying a new unit for custom clearance and sending back the goods.

We've been trying to absorb the extra cost as much as we can since we launched the OGA.
Just contact us.

Unfortunately like all customs related things it depends on the country, but many countries will not charge customs on an item that is marked having been repaired under warranty.

just receive a new board from RMA process though I have to pay additional cost for custom ( 7 USD ). anyway just assemble and it looks working perfectly i can boot with out dc jack.

only some question:
the charging led is turned off when charging (without booting to batocera / screen off )
in this case is it still charging ? I have read it should be still charging when screen off.

Yes, it should charge while the LCD and LEDs turn off.
Just wait a few hour for full charging. (4 hours should be enough)

Ok after testing the charger etc it all finally working as it should be I should thank for the help.
But just one more thing the headphone is not working TT
insert all the way down still doesnt work.

Maybe because it didn’t contact firmly between the jack phone and the jackphone connector

Some old OS images might need a manual configuration to enable the headphone output.
If it doesn't help, try re-soldering the pins of the phone jack connector just in case.
