Emuelec for the Odroid Go Advance May update!

Post by shanti » Sun Jan 26, 2020 4:39 am

There is a new test version which includes among other fixes, a sleep mode (thanks to KiwiHop).
Power button will now be a sleep mode and HK+power will be fully shutdown (you can also shutdown from the menu)

As all tests, it is highly recommended to use a clean install, but if you insist on upgrading remember to run "Reset emuelec scripts and binaries to default" from the danger zone menu in EmuELEC settings.

there has been some reports of random black screens, but I cannot reproduce them, so if this happens to you and have a way to reproduce it, please let me know!

Download here, https://emuelec.dpi.mx/files/?dir=OdroidGoAdvance

------- OLD INFO -----

Version 3.5 of EmuELEC has been released, it is now uploaded to Github as it is now out of the testing phase :)

https://github.com/EmuELEC/EmuELEC/releases/tag/v3.5

------- OLD INFO -------

A new version has been uploaded, March 08 (although server shows march 9 its still March 8 here :P) but remember please keep in mind this is STILL alpha! so don't expect all issues to be fixed!

You can update as usual, but since this is a huge internal update, I recommend to backup your settings before doing so!

Thanks to @AreaScout and @Crashoverride we now have a natively rotated version of SDL! this means that all emulators that depend on SDL are now properly oriented!
This includes: Diablo, Prince of Persia, ScummVMSA, ResiualVM, PPSSPP, StellaSA, HatariSA, OpenBor, DosBoxSDL, Advmame (if I can ever get it to work). hypseus, and others, also surprisingly, drastic!

That means that basically the only thing with incorrect orientation is the scripts section.
  • Added rotated SDL thanks to AreaScout and Crashoverride
  • Emulationstation now shows a battery icon (Thanks to Fabrice Caruso from Batocera)
  • Added more paths to the backup option (drastic config and saves)
  • Updated Amiberry
  • Fix volume not saving
  • Fix headphone detection at boot
  • Power button now turns off the device from anywhere in ES
Before reporting any problem, please make sure it is not mentioned as a known issue here!
  • Text is over loading screen
  • No splash screen support (not sure this is even needed, but will keep on looking for an alternative)
  • Some slow SD cards make some emulators stutter so use the fastest one you have.
  • Some users have reported their OGA going into some sort of black screen randomly and the only way to wake it up is by pressing the power button, I cannot reproduce this so not sure what is happening
  • The screen sometimes flickers and shows the background for a split second, not sure why it does this.
I feel the image is getting to a good point where I am almost happy with it, I also know you want to flash the image and have the best performance ever, but remember this takes time, I am doing it as fast as I can and as much as my knowledge lets me, but I also not want to rush it just because some people cant play N64 at 60fps (not that it will ever happen). If you think this image is not performing the same as others on certain emulators it might be because:
1.- Their image might be better (so you should probably use that one?)
2.- We do not use the same emulator (as is the case on N64 emulators)
3.- Or because the optimization stage has not begun on EmuELEC.

Optimization will come (but don't get your hopes up thought, I don't expect much improvement and I mean if optimization is available on compile) when the base image is on a place I would consider (or close to) rock solid and I am happy with it, so sit tight!

I might have forgotten some changes and issues, if so, please remind me :P

Shanti

------------------------------- OLD (but useful) INFO -------------------------------

A new version has been uploaded, March 01 please keep in mind this is STILL alpha! so don't expect all issues to be fixed!

Before you report any problem please understand that since EmuELEC is in constant update, it is recommend to ALWAYS update following this small guide:

"To update you have to copy the .tar file into the Update shared folder over samba/winscp (or from a file-manager if you can write on ext4 remember it needs to be opened as root) the internal path is /storage/.update once the file has been copied go into the Main menu > EmuELEC Settings > Danger Zone > Reset EmuELEC scripts and binaries to default, this will do 2 things, backup your most common settings, reset all scripts and binaries (doh!), reboot, update then restore the settings automatically, this is the preferred way to update! You will loose any modifications you have made to scripts, so if you want to save those, make sure you do a manual backup of them first!"

I'll repeat. Any changes you have made to scripts outside of the backed up paths will be LOST, so back them up manually if you want to, but make sure you do not break the scripts when restoring!

As of today these are the paths saved on the backup:

Code: Select all

	                 /storage/.local/share/VVVVVV/* \
	                  /storage/.cache/bluetooth/* \
	                  /storage/.cache/connman* \
	                  /emuelec/configs/emuoptions.conf \
	                  /emuelec/configs/emuelec.conf \
	                  /storage/.emulationstation/es_*.cfg \
	                  /tmp/joypads/* \
	                  /storage/.config/retroarch/*.cfg \
	                  /storage/.config/ppsspp/* \
	                  /storage/.config/retroarch/config/*
Also, these are not touched, but not backed up

Code: Select all

/storage/roms
/storage/downloads
/storage/.config/emulationstation/themes
/storage/.update
If you feel another path should be added to any of these lists, please let me know!

This version adds a few small fixes, as well as headphone sensing (will auto switch audio output when headphones are connected, not yet perfect but it works for now) I ketp the global shortcut as a fast mute button :)

This also switches Retroarch to XMB and proper widgets sizes, but if you are updating, you need to manually change some settings

On the main menu, go into System Settings, Developer and turn off "Use Retroarch RGUI Menu" (unless of course you want RGUI then don't)
On Retroarch menu (press III + IV) go into "Settings", "User Interface" turn on "Show advance settings", then go back and select "On Screen Display" "Onscreen Notifications" Turn off "Auto Scale Graphics Widgets" and set "Graphics Widgets Scale Override" to 2.00x . No need to do anything if you are on a fresh install!

WiFi has also been fixed and it should now work as intended!
Snes9x has been optimized a Snes9x2010 has been added as a core option on SNES (works best for Special FX games)
Scripts are now WORKING! although the screen is sideways, its enough to scan games on Scummv, or read the last emuelec.log, install drastic and do small things like that!

I probably forgot to mention a few fixes

But as always still known issues and fixes!
  • WiFi is not working on latest image using ES, you can still connect from Retroarch, this will be fixed on next release! FIXED!
  • Text is over loading screen
  • No splash screen support (not sure this is even needed, but will keep on looking for an alternative)
  • Scripts (on the setup menu) do not work (can't open a terminal window, anyone has any idea how this could be done? I used fbterm on amlogic, but the go advance uses KMS/GBM instead of fbdev) FIXED!
  • ResidualVM and ScummVM can't scan for games, as they need script support (you can still do it by SSH if you really like) FIXED!
  • [s]No global hotkeys (volume, brightness) yet[/s] -- -- ADDED see notes!
  • [s]No auto switching headphone/speaker (is this even possible?)[/s] -- Workaround ADDED see hotkey notes! FIXED!
  • Some emulators and ports do not yet have screen rotated ([s]VVVVVV[/s], StellaSA, HatariSA, [s]OpenBOR[/s], maybe others) VVVVVV,OpenBor, DosboxSDL, ScummVM are now rotated!
  • Some emulators still do not work properly or at all ([s]Amiberry[/s] has screen issues and Reicast does not yet load for example) - Amiberry should now work correctly, but due to lack of time I didn't properly tested it
  • Some slow SD cards make some emulators stutter so use the fastest one you have.
  • [s]Retroarch menu does not rotate :/[/s] -- Fixed :)
  • [s]Some settings need to be set by default, will be done on next release, (sceen ratio, retroarch menu driver, etc)[/s] -- fixed! settings are now saved and restored on reboot! but you can change them in the meantime on the main menu > game options, (this can also be set per game, press button 1 when selecting a game.) I recommend adding smoothing globally! FIXED!
  • Some emulator settings (e.g. Gameboy colorization) are not being saved properly! FIXED!

------------------------------- OLD INFO -------------------------------

A new version has been uploaded, Feb 27 please keep in mind this is still alpha! so don't expect all issues to be fixed!

Also please keep in mind I have little time to test everything, so some stuff I might have missed! let me know about it, but check the known issues before!

What has been added is something that a lot of people seem to be asking for, global hotkeys and automatic volume/brightness save!

I tried my best to find a solution that would not hog all the buttons, for this I had to compromise, I know this won't make everyone happy but for now it will have to do!

Global hotkey (HK) enable is button III (3)

HK + Dpad up/down changes volume ( I am not sure why the volume works like this, after around 60% you can't barely hear anything on the speakers! this is the same on ALL OGA Images AFAIK!)
HK + Dpad left/right changes brightness
HK + Right bumper toggles between headphones and speakers

Note: That ES does not have a hotkey function so the menu will still move when you set the hotkeys, this also happens in games, just be aware of that!

These hotkeys are NOT the same as the previously posted and those still work!

In-game hotkeys for Retroarch (some of them also work on Amiberry):
Hotkey is button 1
HK + Up/down controls volume
1 + LB Loads Savestate / RB saves
1 + 4 Shows/hides FPS
1 + 5 fast forward
1 + 6 quits game
1 + x loads menu (this also works with 3 + 4)
1 + b resets
1 + dpad left/right change save slot
For other emulators 1 + 6 quits emulator

Additional note: You may notice volume level is a bit lower than regular this is intended, my speaker blew up with the regular volume (it now sounds like it has sand on it), someone else also reported this on Discord, so I reduced the max volume from 100+ to 100.

Still known issues and fixes!

To flash fresh use the .img.gz and use etcher or win32imager like any other image :)

This is just a quick preview running GBA, there is still no image available as I need to figure out a few quirks, but in general its coming out really cool :)

https://youtu.be/r7rDkB9VkFE

Systems I tested so far are, NES, SNES, SNES with MSU1, Genesis (MD), PSX, Naomi (but runs not that great) , N64, Master system, Amiga (with PUAE, working on Amiberry) basically most Libretro cores work perfectly fine. I also tested OpenBOR and it runs really well, but I need to figure out how to rotate the screen.

The reason I didn't release a test image is because there is a weird bug that seems to make games stutter, its related to the SD card access, and it seems it only affects a few SDs, and I still need to clean up some remaining and unneeded services, but keep an eye on this post and I will release a test image ASAP.

Many thanks to cdu13a from the CoreELEC team who helped me a LOT to figure out the booting process and to the batocera team from which I borrowed a few configurations and of course Hardkernel for giving me early access to the device so I can port EmuELEC to it.

I will post more videos when I make more progress :)

I got PPSSPP with the libgo2 working, but as expected PSP is not that great, but some games run better than I expected! haven't tested the pure SDL2 version yet.
Also got Amiberry working with libgo2 as well, but I think I am having problems with the configuration options:)

So is this a fork of LibreELEC, CoreELEC, or just a fresh start using the ELEC just-enough-OS primciple? I'm intrigued either way, I'm just curious.

The base is CoreELEC but without Kodi and no video decoder drivers, etc, so a streamlined version made specifically for emulators

The first early alpha of EmuELEC for Odroid Go Advance is up for download

It's still very early and many things need to be changed/fixed

To load ROMS, connect by network share to the ROM folder and copy your roms, bios should go in roms/bios, you can check the main menu > game options > missing bios screen
you can also browse the SD card after it has been resized (done at first boot) with a Linux machine (or Windows with a ext4 program), and copy them to the roms folder directly (you need administrator/root access to this folder)

Features:
  • Most Retroarch/libretro emulators work fine
  • Background music (shoud go into the roms/BGM folder mp3s and ogg are supported)
  • Samba shares (to load roms)
  • SSH (see first issue)
  • Usb Stick rom mounting (create a folder named /roms with the same folder structure as https://github.com/EmuELEC/EmuELEC/wiki ... t-Rom-Path and add an empy file named emuelecroms with no extension)
  • Ports work but need the roms/bios (check the main menu > game options > missing bios screen)
  • Includes PPSSPP with libgo2 support by crashoverride

In-game hotkeys for Retroarch (some of them also work on Amiberry):
Hotkey is button 1
1 + Up/down controls volume
1 + LB Loads Savestate / RB saves
1 + 4 Shows/hides FPS
1 + 5 fast forward
1 + 6 quits game
1 + x loads menu (this also works with 3 + 4)
1 + b resets
1 + dpad left/right change save slot
For other emulators 1 + 6 quits emulator

Known issues:
  • Text is over loading screen
  • No splash screen support
  • Scripts (on the setup menu) do not work (can't open a terminal window, anyone has any idea how this could be done? I used fbterm on amlogic, but the go advance uses KMS/GBM instead of fbdev)
  • ResidualVM and ScummVM can't scan for games, as they need script support
  • No global hotkeys (volume, brightness) yet
  • No auto switching headphone/speaker (is this even possible?)
  • Some emulators and ports do not yet have screen rotated (VVVVVV, StellaSA, HatariSA, OpenBOR, maybe others)
  • Some emulators still do not work properly or at all (Amiberry has screen issues and Reicast does not yet load for example)
  • Some slow SD cards make some emulators stutter so use the fastest one you have.
  • Retroarch menu does not rotate :/ -- Fixed :)
  • Some settings need to be set by default, will be done on next release, (sceen ratio, retroarch menu driver, etc) you can change them in the meantime on the main menu > game options, (this can also be set per game, press button 1 when selecting a game.)
Enjoy and if you try it and find something else I missed please let me know

Use etcher or your favorite flashing tool on a SD!

Only HK Module 0 WiFi dongle works, no other dongle or Ethernet adapter has worked for me, even tho they connect fine, can't download themes or connect to the device by SSH
Check out my post here for additional drivers that should work: viewtopic.php?f=194&t=37485

If you don't see your driver listed just give me as much information as you can and I'll work on it.

Also, try using netplan instead of NetworkManager.

That is not the issue, the problem I am facing is different, SSL does not work on any other dongle or adapter except for the Module 0

This image is by far my favourite image to use! Batocera kept reverting back to stock settings and my roms would disappear for some strange reason, the ubuntu image has no way to change discs for multidisc games but this has everything I need. Many thanks to you and also to the Hardkernel team :D

I went into game settings and set the game ratio to square pixel instead of auto.

I couldn't get lr-gpsp to load a rom, I have the bios in the right place but it just goes back to the menu screen. Is this an emulator that isn't working?

This is one of the more full-featured OS so far but I can't seem to get any audio from the 3.5mm audio jack. Am I missing something?

Thank you for your work on this!

Thank you!!

You need to go into the system settings and switch to the headphone jack on the audio output. Still trying to figure out if there is a automatic way to switch when you plugin the headphones

I couldn't get lr-gpsp to load a rom, I have the bios in the right place but it just goes back to the menu screen. Is this an emulator that isn't working?
Is there a particular reason you want lr-gpsp ?

The stock core (i'm not sure which one it uses) doesn't run Final Fantasy IV Advance at full speed, it stutters on the opening scene. I had more luck running said rom on lr-gpsp when I was using a Pi zero and 3b+ so thought I would give it a try.

This is one of the more full-featured OS so far but I can't seem to get any audio from the 3.5mm audio jack. Am I missing something?

Thank you for your work on this!

Oh that's odd, I went to look in System Settings, but the only option I have for Audio Output is Auto.

Makes sense, but I think lr-gpsp is broken (even on the other platforms I use it) it was never meant to be included, and unless I can find a solution it will be removed in the final image :(

Can you try it please? Just to see its not isolated. It's slow with every os I've tried, gameplay maybe 60 fps but the opening sure isn't.

You are right, that cloud intro really makes the GBA emus crawl! I will see more into it.

EDIT: Got gpsp working, and it runs much better :) will be available on the next test release as soon as I fix a few quirks

Amazing build so far... I love the hotkeys any luck rotating the menus on retroarch, I read somewhere on the lakka build they were having the same issues, said something about using the wayland-egl library.

Just uploaded a new test version:

Fixed gPSP, which now seems to be the fastest GBA emu available
Added Heaphone output (in the menu go to system settings and select audio output)
Set RGUI as default Retroarch menu driver, since its easier to navigate until I can find a proper rotation solution
Temporarily removed splash screens and video, as they were causing problems
Fixed other small bug-fixes
Added working Reicast (but the game-pad is not yet set up properly and can't exit the emu, I suggest not to use it yet)

Remember there is still a LOT of work to do on this, need to do a proper cleanup of packages and change some settings to better work on the OdroidGoAdvance, but if you find any problem please let me know!

Same link https://1drv.ms/u/s!AhB0moRaeC4QgxnwvQl ... y?e=U4YoOi :)

Unfortunately no, you will have to do a manual backup to do this I had to change the internal name so it will not update, sorry

I bought the cheapest Ethernet adapter I could find on Amazon and it works with first and second alpha. It's a chinese unknown brand: "Rankie USB Network Adapter, USB 3.0 to RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet Internet Adapter"

were you able to get other wifi dongles working? More work in the hk image and retro arena... admittedly I haven't dug much as many utilities are missing(unsurprisingly) from those distro images.. apt-get works, but I haven't done anything other than update/upgrade to check (libxml2 updates on both of those images), and I installed 7zip package on retro arena (unfortunately there is apparently a newish(?) rar variant that it doesn't support(yet, or a broken rar created by an unofficial rar archiver not sure which ATM)).

EDIT:
OK, WIFI IS working for me, but I have no idea what the user/pw combo is ATM, odroid/odroid does NOT work.

EDIT2:
OK it's root/emuelec, and ssh IS working This
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07M6 ... UTF8&psc=1

adapter

EDIT3:
actually I guessed the pw correctly given my exp w/libreelec, but I thought that he might've gotten cute with the user.

Haven't checked out any 'backups' yet, may or may not tonight, but that said emuelec is looking best of all w/more options (I hope) working, and less OS BS v. the Ubuntu based/base HK image... although TBF the HK will eventually have 'projects' as well(like the go), so the fuller OS support is intentional, although for pure emulation I think a more stripped down system is best...

EDIT4:
psx emu has the screen rotation problem... pspemu is worse than the others, gave up for tonight...

I believe the unit I have might have some weird issues, as people have reported several dongles working for them, specially on the new image I just uploaded. For me, none work except for the HK Module 0 WiFi dongle, which is very weird, but I would not count this as a general bug anymore.

Could you elaborate on this? the PSX emu is ran under Retroarch so it should behave as the others, doesn't it?

PSP is going to be a really hard, hit and miss on this device, some games will run better than others but I assume most wont.

PSX works fine with anything I tested. Rotation can be tweaked via in-game menu: 1 + X > B > Settings > Video > Output > Video Rotation

You need to switch "Show Advanced Settings" to ON in Settings > User Interface to see the rotation option.

Hi, this system is fantastic! A lot less headaches getting roms working than the other options.

I'm having trouble getting MK2 to run full screen, using square pixel aspect ratio it looks great but there is a large black border around it / not using the whole screen. I'm assuming a custom cfg file is needed, but I am not sure where it goes. I tried putting one i made in the same folder as the mk2.zip (mk2.zip.cfg) on the USB2.0 thumb drive I have my roms on but it seems to not work.

EDIT: Found it, set Integer Scale to ON and Aspect Ratio to Core Provided in Games Advanced Settings! Looks and plays great!

emuelec is the best OS I think.

If a slight improvement is possible, the system's sound or screen brightness settings can be saved or controlled via hotkeys in OS

Thanks all for trying out EmuELEC, remember this still needs a lot of work, but if you have made any changes to setting you think should be set as default, let me know and I will implement them ASAP!

Hi Shanti

Just FYI, installed your Emuelec on my Go Advance - all 42 systems working great - good work!

I've installed the bezels through settings > the bezel project but they don't appear to show on any game - is there another setting to enable them?

Couple more things- where do you change the time? And is there a battery gauge?

EDIT: Figured out the time - changed system.timezone=Mexico/General to system.timezone=Europe/London in the same file them set system time from the terminal using the date command.

FYI - Netgear G54/N150 USB wifi adaptor works great on this build :-)

There's an option in the setting menu - not sure if it works though.

I have to say this is the best image I have tested! Thank you for all the hard work!

I have a couple of notes:
1. Any way to get N64 running better? It's not horrible it just slow, doesn't this processor/gpu support volkan?
--Nevermind! I found that using the Parallel_n64_libretro emulator with the gln64 GFX plugin works like a charm! Even Paper Mario looks and runs nearly perfect.
2. PSX is awesome, even with the high resolution turned on runs great.
3. ppsspp: anyways to make the menu/font smaller? What about Volkan support here as well?
4. Other Retro: All seem to run really good, small stutters with the snes and super fx but toying with the core and it is running good now.
5. Any way to add a sleep option (seeing it is portable), or does it always need to be shutdown and restarted when pressing the power?
6. I have not see any options for this, but is there support for speeding up/fast forward emulation (for those unskip-able 20 minute loading screens lol)
--Found these in the hotkeys settings.
7. Possibly a global way to assign keys or macros?

Again thank you for this!
