As promised, v1 of The Retro Arena Release Candidate image. There will be a few bugs I'm sure, but we will work hard to resolve those as fast as we can, once we know they exist. Please post any issues or comments here or our FB group, or our discord server. You can also email me directly to my mobile phone at TechToyTinker.com
There are two custom made themes in this early preview, both by Travis Wilson, along with 48 systems(I removed atari xg and 800 last night to fix them). You will need to add bios for certain emulators, this link below will explain what bios is needed for which system, the bios goes directly into the folder containing the core, which is located in /opt:

https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Se ... ed-Systems

The Retro Arena Release Candidate 1:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TFph93 ... p=drivesdk

I have greatly enjoyed working on this device and helping to create this image, it has been a lot of fun, and there is still a lot of potential to continue growing and building. This release will be receiving long term support from The Retro Arena team, as such it will be updated with new emus and cores, and more themes as they become available.

Many videos of gameplay and performance can be located on YouTube at:

Thank you for reading, and for your continued support of both Hard Kernel and The Retro Arena!

Looks great so far, can you give us a complete list of available emulators? or is it just too long of a list? ;)

Mostly complete system list for TheRA;
CPS 1,2,3, intellivision, PSP, neo geo, neo geo pocket/color, wonderswan / color, Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, lynx, msx 1 and 2, Sega cd, 32x, Genesis, master system, game gear, sg-1000, colecovision, scummvm, n64, n64dd, mame, Nintendo DS, super grafx, sharp x1, virtual boy, fb neo/arcade, Gameboy, Gameboy color,. Gameboy advance, nes, PC engine, PC engine cd, snes, PlayStation, psp minis.

There are probably a couple missing, I will update the list shortly.

Also, please note that snesmsu1 folder uses snes9x2010 while SNES uses snes9x. You need 2010 for some games that had special chips in the cart, ie Yoshi's island and star fox.

Looks very impressive :D Just curious how well the Nintendo DS emulation works & how does it work with the 2 screens? I'd like to try Pokemon Black/White at some point.

As far as I understand, it is based on the stock OS, which is Ubuntu ?
Can you detail what are the changes/additions ?
Will it be updatable via apt / deb packages or will it need a full system disk rewrite ?

Are you using the same scaling crashoverride implemented into the reference image?

Yes, the image is based on crashes retrorun and incorporates his developments into the build.

You only need to rewrite for big changes to the base image. New emulators and themes can be added with no reflash.

Hiya,
Would there be any chance of a smaller version of this image?
(I only have an 8GB card spare at the moment 😕)
Thx in advance.

(UPDATE: Ignore me - seems microSD cards are v.cheap & I'm WELL overdue an upgrade!)

Thanks for your helpful posts on Go-Advance OS. If you wanted to wanted to start to build you microSD. Here are some instructions to get started:

https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid_go_advan ... _game_roms

Before copying files, you have to boot the ODROID device with the OS installed SD card file first.
The OS will resize the EXT4 root file system to fit the SD card capacity in the first booting process.
1. Flash the OS image with Etcher.
2. Plug the SD card to ODROID.
3. Turn on the device and wait a couple of minutes.
4. Safely shutdown the system by pressing power button.
5. Unplug the SD card from ODROID and connect the SD card to your PC with a card reader.
6. Transfer ROM files in to the SD card.

You have to turn off auto save
1) Open root drive --> etc/emulationstaion you will see es_system.cfg
2) Edit it! at the end of every command you see %rom%
before that line add -r with a space at front and back of -r
ex. will look like this --> so -r %rom%
to disable auto save

Hi,
I've installed this OS, but I can't run some emulators : Only neogeo, n64 (curious mapping, how can I change it ?) and 32x works fine, neither snes, megadrive, gamegear work (stuck with black screen) nor gameboy color, gameboy advance, mastersystem, nes which immediatly come back to selection screen.
Is there something I missed ?
Thanks !
[EDIT]Ok, I got it : like I said 2 post lower, I copied rom dirs from my recalbox raspberry. Which contain the gamelist.xml with absolute rompath (not the same that retroarena). I removed gamelist and every game works. Still looking for button remapping with n64 though[/EDIT]

Without wifi you're not supposés to be connected to the internet, so I would say
No, you can't
Since I have a raspberry Pi running emulation station, I only copied files from it (with every game scrapped) to my SD card.

Quick question, I'm trying to get CPS 1 and 2 to work but they aren't booting, thinking it's cause I don't have the bios in the right spot for them. Where should they go???

Hi there,

Thank you for the excellent build, I’m really enjoying it at the moment. In my early usage I’ve noticed a few things and wanted to give a bit of feedback if that’s OK!:

* The volume appears to only be adjustable via the software menu. Is there a way to bind a hot key to one of the function buttons to allow the volume to be adjusted in-game?

* Some of the controls, such as N64 would be better tweaked per game. Is there a hot key available to the emulator to allow changing controls/settings?

* ScummVM works, but it seems a little unoptimised, tad slow in some places, and MT-32 emulation really slows it down. Is it possible to allow the analogue controls to move the cursor a bit faster, and can the newest ScummVM version be used?

* Lynx emulator doesn’t appear to be working currently

* It would be nice to have a hot key to emulator settings! (To change filter options, manual save/load states etc.)

* Option to disable automatic save states on game boot.

* More emulators / ports - Can we get things like Amiga, C64, Game and Watch, Prboom, Duke3D, Cannonball, Openbor

* Any chance of zipped ROM support?

Other than that, I think this is a remarkable solid build for such an early release. I keenly look forward to how things move forward. Thanks!

-J

No game n watch support? Was looking to add it to the es_system.cfg as the themes have the art already, but it doesn’t look like the core is installed in the image? How can I add this system? Thanks

There is a newer RC2 candidate released: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UlmzYx ... Ozx2I/view

Image downloaded, flashed and Verified ok. I was unable to test on the system unfortunately due to hardware issues.
Nice! No official info on this? Where did this come from?

Couple of questions:
1. In MAME, can vertical games like (Burger Time, Pacman) be rotated into landscape mode?
2. In FBA what button combo gets you to the options screen (like to adjust game difficulty, lives, etc)

If you are using Windows 10, you can scrape the games without using the wifi. Watch the video below to guide you through. Hope this helps.

Is there a login / password required to access the shares over a network? Can anyone let us know what this is? Thanks!

I've added a few Genesis roms to the /roms/megadrive directory on the sdcard and no Genesis/MegaDrive games are showing up in EmulationStation, is there a way to force a rescan to get these games to show up?

Edit: Managed to get the roms to show up by following this thread, now the roms show up but don't launch. Screen goes blank and then EmulationStation opens up again...

Hello!

I've tested both RC1 and RC2, but couldn't get N64 working! After selecting a game, screen switches to the "ubuntu"-brown fullscreen color, then just goes back to emulationstation. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? Are there any pointers on how to fix this? Note, other emulators tested (SNES, PSX, GBA) seem to be working fine and I'm pretty sure my ROMs are OK as they are playable on my other systems.

Update: fixed it, needed to unzip the ROMs to get the emulator working. Not a big deal really, but zip support would be nice if only to be consistent with other emulator platforms. Cheers!
