Encryption

Unread post by nem08422 » Mon Feb 10, 2020 2:20 pm

Hi everyone,

New Odroid user here. I am very excited to use Linux on the hardware. Is encryption and a password before boot supported?

How would you enter a password, there is no keyboard. But if you want to attach a USB keyboard I'm sure you could do what you want.

The device is running Ubuntu underneath if using the Odroid supplied image, anything Ubuntu is capable of within the working limitations will be supported.

I figured I could map the buttons to accept a code similar to a Mortal Combat fatality move.

I've been doing some reading on the Arch Linux wiki, and I think I will be able to map the Go2 keys for entering a password before decrypting the sdcard. I am not a Linux expert, but maybe I can do a write up about it if others are interested.

Consider submitting an odroid magazine article too. I may be interested in using it, though not necessarily with full disk encryption (which would use valuable cpu cycles), but with a simple screenlock that goes away when inputting the correct sequence and allows the system to boot up.
I think this old thing might work too: https://github.com/mad-ady/multibutton

It is #1 on my TODO list once I get my device.

I am anticipating using ncurses based programs such as moc, mc, so I am not sure about possible key combinations. I do know I want a strong passwd that is compatible with qwerty keyboard input. So maybe ESC, backspace, Fn, Shift. Dunno at the moment. And I am thinking about having 0 and 1 input for binary aliases of personal scripts.

If you use a long enough key combination (that you can remember), it should be safe enough. Like this pin I use everywhere... https://youtu.be/ab8GtuPdrUQ

I don't know much about passwd cracking, but I am pretty sure an all number passwd is not strong. So, I have been thinking about mapping key combinations based on 0, 1, a, b, enter, backspace, to function as my full keyboard. So expect a code like 0a01 = a or something like that.

A code like that would be easiest to implement and most accessible to general users. Maybe I can get it included in the stock image?
