What is the EOL for the ODROID-XU4 board?

Post by dneo »

We are currently analyzing a development with this board but I need to know what the EOL of this product is. It is a development for the gaming industry, where the amount of production is large.

We've been shipping 6~7K of XU4/XU4Q boards every month from '2015.
Because there are a lot of B2B customers, we can't stop the production until '2023 at least.

If only you could invest some time to support early exynos adopters by providing fresh kernel for XU/+E even without HWC support we would be grateful, you know. All those patches required for modern security levels render the 3.14.y kernel so obsolete it hurts.
I would probably have had upgraded, but the lack of support for XU makes me fear that support would suddently end (again) and leave me with an obsolete board once again, and I cannot quite afford throwing perfectly functioning and speedy boards into the bin just because they lack kernel support...

There is a community image for xu with mainline kernel, modern ubuntu. Try it out.

a link would be rather helpful, as the phrase itself would yield half a million results.
One problem is that I am not quite acquainted with kernel modding yet, but trying to learn while I can afford the time.

Nope. That's an image for X2, U2 and U3 but (at least on the face of it) not XU. However, there's an Arch image:
https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv ... /odroid-xu
The installation procedure on that page seems odd, though, at least with regard to µSD cards.

Sorry, I mix them up because I don't have any of those boards...

Yes, there is indeed an odroid-XU image using mainline kernel but the mainline has disabled the USB3 support for XU since 2017 due to a non-functioning kernel module that causes overcurrent reports and zero functionality.

https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/ ... -libre-xen
So, the single asset odroid-xu had over raspberry 3 is disabled in mainline kernel leaving us with a rather powerful multicore device with hardly any IO with relevant performance due to a software flaw rather than a hardware one. It's a pity. I am sorry I cannot do kernel work without much reading I cannot afford the time to invest.
If anyone can find it piece of cake and has the way to verify it (the biggest problem always being Samsung's NDA's) and push it to Linus I'd be truly relieved since I would have a very capable board for the job I originally intended it to do.
