N2 / Ubuntu: Output to an old Plasma TV

Unread post by cap_cap » Mon Nov 04, 2019 7:37 am

Hi team,

Please help to find solution for the subject problem.
Output screen: 10y old plasma TV (Samsung). I recall it was only 720p compatible. Based on the common belief it should practicaly be rated 768p. I've made just a few minimal tweaks to the boot.ini:
- disabled autodetect
- set new resolution

A few words in regards to the latter. i have a MS Windows platform sharing the same screen. It's set to 1024x768 resolution. That mode was not supported when setup on N2. I tried closeby 1360x768@60 same hourses. The thing which actually puzzled me the most was that. Before switching to a picture (or say "No" as in my case) the TV shows for a couple of seconds the mode is being sent by the system. In both cases it was showing 1982 x 1080 @60 strange right.

The only mode worked out of the pre-select list was 720p@60 but the picture was a bit offset on the screen (I was not able to see narrow straps of the desktop).

I didn't try some lower resolution modes like 576p or 480p. Even they worked i'd not consider tham as options for me.

Thank you, Michel.

Is there an option to disable the overscan in the TV setting menu something like this?
https://askubuntu.com/questions/4358/ho ... -hdmi-hdtv

Thanks much, it actually worked. The only thing i didn't like about the method is that the picture quality sort of suffered. Please don't consider me unthankful I'm not. The way you offered did work! but on some object i can see warping, which is tyical for scalling would it be zoming in or out. In the first hand it's noticeable to the fonts.

I know it's sort of offtopic question, are my troubles coming from that's Plasma and LCDs processing more "correct"?

TY, Michel.

Don't worry. There is an overscan adjustment feature in the N2 settings too.

Change the overscan value to 90 from 100 by editing boot.ini file and let me know the result.

There is no set value, you will have to find what's right for your TV.

Our old CVBS tube TV needed around 90%.
Try between 80~100 to find an optimal overscan ratio for your TV.

Taking a shot on the screen is not the best methhod i know, but how else to show true perception..
Assynchron can easily be seen on the red fonts. It's old screen, but i know it can do better than this))

Yes.. the red font is really terrible.

Did you already set the resolution to 1360x768 by editing boot.ini file?

If yes, we might need to add 1280x720 HD resolution in the video device driver.

The only mode worked for the tv was 720p. 1360x768 turns display into illegal mode, black screen.
