Unread post by Truly » Sun Nov 03, 2019 9:04 am

Hi everyone,

Maybe a silly question, but can someone tell me if Ubuntu 18.04 MATE is 32-bit or 64-bit?

Ubuntu Mate is a Desktop Flavor from Ubuntu and the MATE project.
It's neither 64bit nor 32bit. It is developed for many different architectures, and CAN RUN on 32bit or 64bit systems, but this also depends on the architecture, as there is x86 and x86_64 or, armhf, armel, arm64, ppc64, etc.

SO generally asking if Ubuntu 18.04 MATE is 32-bit or 64-bit is a rather silly question.

It comes for both 32-bit AND 64-bit computers... but that probably won't answer your question, as you probably did want to know what Ubuntu Mate is, but that's what you asked :)

Actually, I'm quite new in regards to Linux, so this is helpful. Thanks for explaining it to me.

Let me rephrase my question and provide more background for asking it in the first place.

I'm currently running OSMC as operating system with Transmission, CouchPotato, SickChill and NextCloud on my Raspberry Pi 3B with 2TB external USB HDD.
It's connected to my TV and serves well as HTMC.

Using WebDAV access to the NextCloud sever, I'd like to be able to access my media outside my LAN.
This also works to a certain extent since OSMC is 32-bit and PHP has problems with files bigger then 2GB.

I'm now looking for an Odroid board to be dedicated NAS server with Transmission, CouchPotato, SickChill and NextCloud and thit is why I want to make sure that Ubuntu running on it will be 64-bit.
I expect that with better CPU, more RAM, Gigabit ethernet and USB 3.0 port, it would provide much better performance then my Raspberry Pi.
If I manage to set this up, Raspberry Pi would then only have OSMC installed and will be used as HTMC connected to my TV while accessing media libraries on Odroid NAS.

For this purpose, I'm not sure which one is better - XU4Q or N2?

If you need 64bit it will have to be the N2, the XU4 is 32bit only.

Great, thank you.
I'll go with N2 then.

One more question.

Are both kernel and userspace 64-bit?
