ifconfig missing from .img

Unread post by additude » Sat Oct 19, 2019 7:46 pm

Hello,
I have downloaded the latest XU4 image file: ubuntu-18.04.3-4.14-minimal-odroid-xu4-20190910.img.xz and the ifconfig command is not available.

/sbin/ifconfig is not present.

Is this an oversight?

ifconfig is deprecated in favor of ip (ip addr show).
You can install it, but I don't remember in what package it is.

ifconfig is part of "net-tools", so

Code: Select all

sudo apt install net-tools

Yes, living in the past is normal after 20 years of linux usage...

In all fairness, I had some IP issues I couldn't solve with ifconfig, but were obvious with ip. I had two ips set on eth0. Ifconfig showed only the first ip, while ip showed both...

I'm totally with Grandpa Simpson, too :D
Actually, I think things like this are what makes it really hard for Linux beginners: You might have a first idea of whatever it is you want to do and you google it, but 80% of the Linux info is obsolete/doesn't apply to your distro or the version you're using. Once I had learnt to write somewhat decent init scripts, systemd came along etc. :x

Indeed, in the world is medicine it's this way. You have old school doctors who won't continue their training and practice medicine from the past and new school doctors who go to seminars and schools yearly to learn what's new.

what "problem"?
There is no "problem" in this thread.
Either use the "ip" tool that is already pre-installed or install the net-tools and have your old ifconfig back.. I don't see any "problem" here.
Donate to support my work on the ODROID GameStation Turbo Image for U2/U3 XU3/XU4 X2 X C1 as well as many other releases.
Check out the Games and Emulators section to find some of my work or check the files in my repository to find the software i build for ODROIDs.
If you want to add my repository to your image read my HOWTO integrate my repo into your image.
