Spontaneous reboots

Unread post by benwillcox » Tue Jun 18, 2019 5:10 pm

Hi,

I've been using the N2 for a few weeks now as a car-pc. I've had probably about 6 or 7 occasions now where the system will freeze for a couple of seconds and then reboot itself. There doesn't seem to be any pattern as to when, or what apps I might be running at the time (I'm running Android latest version).
The N2 is powered from the 12V supply of the car, although I've not monitored the voltage I doubt there are any power dips when this happens as nothing else is affected.

Also on a couple of occasions it seems that when power is applied to the Odroid it doesn't boot, I need to power cycle the N2 before it will boot up.

Has anyone else found similar issues?

Ben

It is really hard to know a real root cause without raw system log.

BTW, recent Android updates contained the WatchDogTimer reset function by default.
So it will reboot automatically if the Kernel crashes.
Can you try a Kernel crash for the WDT functionality test on Android?

Yes I tried it and it exhibits the same behaviour, i.e. the system freezes for a few seconds then reboots.

So it seems like my problem could be the kernel crashing and the watchdog rebooting. Is there a way that you can suggest I might be able to capture a log from the time this happens?

Thanks,
Ben

Do you have a USB-UART cable to keep logging the system status?

I don't have a cable unfortunately. Would the required information be captured if I captured logcat to my eMMC and then retrieved it after the reboot?

Do you have more kernel logs or logcat?

I'm experiencing similar problems. I've got about 10x ODROID-N2 with the image from 20190627, rooted with Magisk, and they are running 24/7 and playing videos using the VideoView,
they reboot automatically daily at 03:00 (this is a configuired and intended behaviour to free up memory etc.).
BUT, usually about 2-3 of these devices reboot every day suddenly at different times for unknown reason - this is not an intended behaviour but a bug or something.

I don't know where exactly to find the logs to see the reason, but here is what I've found, it happened at Aug 5 08:06:

Code: Select all

I'm experiencing similar problems. I've got about 10x ODROID-N2 with the image from 20190627, rooted with Magisk, and they are running 24/7 and playing videos using the VideoView,
they reboot automatically daily at 03:00 (this is a configuired and intended behaviour to free up memory etc.).
BUT, usually about 2-3 of these devices reboot every day suddenly at different times for unknown reason - this is not an intended behaviour but a bug or something.

I don't know where exactly to find to logs to see the reason, but here is what I've found, it happened at Aug 5 08:06:

Code: Select all

u0_a62@localhost:~$ su -c 'ls -lah /sys/fs/pstore'

It looks like a kernel panic occured and the software watchdog rebooted it, right? but how to find out why?

Thank you.
Thank you for the logs, by any chance are you able to grab the logs from /data/tombstones as well?
Do you see the same devices with errors or different devices every time? Also wondering if the problem happens when playing with a single video file or certain codec format...

Re: Spontaneous reboots

Unread post by systemservice » Mon Aug 05, 2019 6:04 pm

According to the monitoring logs it happened with at least 8 different devices within last 5 days and with some of these devices it happend even several times.

/data/tombstones/ doesn't contain any files:

Code: Select all

u0_a62@localhost:~$ su -c 'ls -lah /data/tombstones/'
total 12K
drwxrwx--x 2 system system 4.0K Jan 1 1970 .
drwxrwx--x 39 system system 4.0K Jul 26 16:05 ..
There are about 3-4 different videos playing in a loop but all of them are encoded with ffmpeg the same way H.264.
I think I will remove these videos for several days and see what happens without the videos.

Here is the /sys/fs/pstore/console-ramoops-0 log of another device and it looks similar:

Code: Select all

@systemservice, thank you for the more info...I've googled with "Bad mode Error" and found some thread for other SoCs as well. I'd forward the error to Amlogic if they know it or workaround.

Also on a couple of occasions it seems that when power is applied to the Odroid it doesn't boot, I need to power cycle the N2 before it will boot up.
My original rebooting issue seems to have resolved itself, I've not had it happen for quite some time. However, I find when I have one of these in the power line https://www.halfords.com/technology/car ... filter-box to reduce noise on the audio output, that often when switching on the power the Odroid doesn't boot. I have to power cycle again for it to boot up. The interference suppressor is a very simple LC filter, presumably acting as a low pass filter. Could it be that this is causing the supply is rising to the minimum threshold too slowly and the Odroid is not correctly resetting/triggering the boot sequence? Are there any specifications for supply voltage rise time that need to be met before the Odroid will boot correctly?

I think i've had better stability by disabling the ondemand service https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/appl ... _systemctl

Yesterday I removed the videos and today I see that none of these 10 testing devices have rebooted suddenly. This is interesting, because when videos were playing it happened every day at least with 1-2 devices. I continue to observe it for several days and than will add the videos one by one and see what happens.

It looks like it's about Ubuntu, but my problem occurs in Android Pie.

I'm using a LTC3780 based DC-DC converter and so far I hadn't had any issues with either noise, boot-up or stability. I had, however, problems with a power supply that cut off sporadically and booting up directly after. This had the effect that I found the N2 shut down but was able to boot it again by GPIO.
See: https://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-5V-32V-to-1 ... a972f81045

You can extend these boards with a power switch but I can't guarantee that this ramps up the voltage quickly enough to boot up the N2. My suggestion is to apply permanent supply and pull down the corresponding power GPIO to boot it. This works 100%

Thanks I'll give one of those a try. I tried out one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LM2596S-DC-D ... VupHRamMuA in the hope it would get rid of the high frequency noise on the supply but it made no difference, and I could still hear engine rev related whine through the audio output. Hopefully the one you suggest will solve my power up issue too. One final problem I'm also experiencing is that when I start the engine the Odroid occasionally resets, presumably the voltage dip is enough to cause this. I never had this problem with the Odroid C2 when powered via one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-to-5V-Du ... OSwyWddHGA~ so hopefully it will also solve this problem too. Shame the N2 can't be powered off a 5V supply as there are loads of these potted type available which seem to be quite reliable in my experience and pretty cheap.

The LTC3780 should handle dips quite well. Just have a look at the input range 😁

Yesterday, after upgrade to new version (20190809) my Odroid two times reboot suddenly.
That not happened earlier, I'm using it for half year. It not seems like power problem because system freeze for moment, before reboot. My Odroid isn't rooted and reboot occurs while playing YouTube.

Same thing happened to 2 of my N2 with latest version (20190812). Here is the logcat:
https://pastebin.com/AxmqAvT0

I tried disable/enable the bluetooth service in Android, it still happened. I don't have bluetooth dongle connected.

Thanks, let us look into the log. Looks like the bluetooth cause a crash. Please keep sharing the logs if you have more.

Not sure if this information helps, but I had pie_20190801 with no freezes and today after an update to pie_20190812 I had 3-4 freezes and reboots. No Blutooth, no WiFi, only mouse and HDMI-monitor connected. And I also loosing connection to serial debug interface - not at the same time of the freezes at all...

Will check debug information again for crashes an add here...

Back to my posts from 05-06. Aug 2019:

image from 20190627, rooted with Magisk.

After a lot of testing by playing 3 different videos in a VideoView 24/7 on 10x ODROID-N2 simultaneously for several days before adding/removing/replacing them, I have found out that the reboots happen only with one of these videos.
All videos have been converted from MKV/WMV/AVI to H.264 MP4 the same way using ffmpeg 3.2.14.

With this video the reboots happen every day on 1-3 from 10 devices at least 1 time:

I am having the same/similar issue, on the latest image and latest 32 bit Pico gapps. I haven't captured a logcat, but for me it seems to be triggered under higher loads (multiple apps at once) and possibly heavy network traffic ?

For example, when I was streaming music, and then ran a browser speed test, it crashed and caused a reboot. Another instance I had started a VPN and started a music stream (normally runs fine on my network on Android 9 on other devices).

I'm hoping this is just something with this image.. :) it's expected with something in development though! It's certainly still usable :) great work so far hardkernel! I will post a logcat etc if it's helpful... Let me know. J

Also I forgot to add what's plugged in etc , which might be helpful? Running the latest image on a hardkernel 8gb emmc, one Logitech USB dongle (for keyboard/touchpad) and a SanDisk cruzer 8gb. I will try removing the drive and then both, and test that as well. :) (Should have done that first...?) :-)

I moved to the latest alpha of LineageOS-16.0, and non of the issues came up. It did reject the usb drive (stated on a status pop up that the 8gb sandisk cruzer drive was incompatible). That could have been my issue on the stock image. Thank you again Hardkernel for such an amazing device for me to play with... its running great ! J

Hello guys i was wondering if the problem was identified and if there is a correction scheduled in the next update. Because i have the same issue and it annoys me a lot, and believe me i'm watching my language.

Sorry i have neither logs nor others proofs but on my side it's definitively a network issue. When i start the ExpressVpn apk i enter my account and when i connect to the vpn it crashes systematically. When i use utorrent apk on the back it's just a matter of minutes before it freezes and reboots. In case it can helps.

Here are logcats from my last four random reboots and also all the files in /data/tombstone. I'm on @voodik 0820 LOS build and experience at least one reboot a day. The logcats are being captured 24/7 by another computer via ADB, presumably in real time.

Please let me know how I can help troubleshoot. These reboots are really wearing on me.

I am also suffering from the reboots still. It did seem to improve for a while after I added a stable DC-DC converter to my 12v car supply, but after updating to the latest Android release it has happened a couple of times so I don't believe it's PSU related.
There doesn't appear to be much input from HardKernel on this?

Could you please share your set up what hardware is attached and what software is running. We do have an internal test before releasing and have not observed the critical stability issue. Can you grab Android log when your system reboots?

I seem to be having problems with Spontaneous reboots also.

Hardware setup

ODROID-N2 with 4GByte RAM
32Gb emmc with Android Pie (20190820)
Rii i25 Mini Wireless Keyboard

Problems happen during media playback using the following,

Youtube (has happened multiple times)
Youtube vanced (has happened multiple times)
Kodi (only happened once)
iptv smarters pro (has happened multiple times)
other iptv apps (has happened multiple times)

need to figure out how to gather the logs and i'll send them on - this is happening at least once a day..

Also have a second box which was just bought last week which is also experiencing the same issue's but is running android TV..

I have the exact same problem as I replaced the power adapter to 12 V 3 A and 12 V 4 A is currently useless using the latest 64-bit version and the problem is still a solution from the solution at the developers.
Waiting for any update resolves the problem .

I had none of these issues so far while running the exact same build (and I assume DC-DC converter) so I assume it's hardware related of some kind or to some extent.

No idea if it is related, but I've been having a similar spontaneous reboot issue while running Ubuntu 18.04 minimal.

I think it's the same problem?
The system freezes for seconds and then reboots itself !!

I recently upgraded to LineageOS-16 and also experienced an unexpected reboot.
It doesn’t seem to be related to any specific App I’m running as far as I can tell, and there’s no particular action that triggers it.

Do experienced people tell us about the issue and the cause of the problem?

As mentioned in the release note of Android 64bit, it's preview release and needs to invest some time to make it more stable. By the time having a stable 64bit version, the Android release will keep maintaining the 32bit version as well. Therefore I suggest not to run Android 64bit for a system that requires stability.

Also, always appreciate getting shared your experiences and issues.

I believe all users in this thread are on either the 32 bit HK or Lineage releases. In our experience, neither are stable 24/7. I myself have provided over a dozen logcats and tombstone logs about a month ago.

@voodik looked over my logs and advised that he will release an updated Lineage 16 image that's more streamlined for troubleshooting. That was a month ago and no news since.

My setup is still constantly crashing. I'm hopeful that a maintainer will step up to the challenge of providing us with a stable Android release capable of 24/7 operation.

By the time having a stable 64bit version, the Android release will keep maintaining the 32bit version as well. Therefore I suggest not to run Android 64bit for a system that requires stability.

New update almost ready, waiting user confirmation about some GPS HAL lib issues. Tried reproduce this issue without luck.
Youtube auto pause feature is making it more hard to reproduce. Playing 4k HEVC H264 wideos also not making any troubles for me.
ATV image running on another board is alive more than 500 hours (electricity cut occurred).

BTW, test version already posted on Lineage-16.0 thread.

On this version Bluetooth stack disabled by default. Also if you don't have a any USB microphone you need go to Settings> Apps > App Permissions > Microphone and disallow it for ALL apps to avoid Audio track logspam. Device reboots sounding about Kernel panic. Panics trace can be dump only via serial console.
So for this i trying reproduce issue.

Thanks voodik, I'll try this test version. It sounds like kernel panics need more than just logcats to troubleshoot.

Is ADB over network a suitable serial console? If so then I've had success with the following:

adb shell cat /proc/kmsg > dmesg.log

Not sure if this is what you need. Can you please advise on which specific logs you'd like me to pull? Thanks much.

I have the same issue here. I'm using the latest Android firmware from the Odroid Official link, and its usually reboot when watching a movie on Lightning App or Youtube, Chrome, which downloaded from Google Store.
I'm using SD Card with 64 Gb from Samsung Evo Plus Up to 100MB / s Read and 60MB / s Write speed with Class 10 and U3 compatibility and watching on 480p to 1080p

I am using an emmc 64 card and I run a native YouTube program from the store and I use the latest firmware for the 64-bit Android system from hardkernel too and do not know what is the reason and is restarted in the day between 3 to 4 times and no one of the specialists knew the reason for this moment.
