What to do to make Ubuntu Mate faster? Armbian as fast, enough for me.

set CPU governor to performance is a good start to get things speed up.
Although it's hard to tell what you consider "faster", or what you want to go faster... CPU calculation? Window movement? Boot time?

Chromium gets heavier after 10-15 minutes, transitions between programs slow down. I used it in Armbian for a few months, and it didn't happen. Mate starts to slow down a few minutes after it opens.

Since the N2 does not have hardware support for GPU Desktop acceleration I highly recommend AGAINST using Chromium on the N2.
Rather use FireFox which does have much better performance without GPU acceleration than Chromium.

Desktop performance I'm not sure. Once again I highly recommend to set the CPU to performance governor, which might be the default on Armbian.

Mate, the default setting is Performance and 1.90ghz.
I also use the "CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor"

Try setting the Mate compositor to Marco (No compositor)

Update the system with the following commands and reboot. Then, you will have a improved Marco package.

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
sudo reboot

What's improved on that marco version?

Ubuntu's stock Marco package has a bug. It is a sort of UI bug.
After changing to "Macro Adaptive compositor", moving window speed was okay.
But if I rebooted, I had to change the window-manager option again to have the same speed.
I had to select Marco(No compositor) and Marco(Adaptive compositor) to get fast moving window.
It means the selected WM option was violated once I rebooted as well as the Mate-Tweak GUI had bugs.
So we rebuilt "marco" package to fix the issue.
It was applied to C1 and C2 too.

Thanks for your help.

I did the update:
There is a problem.
Marco (No compositor) and Marco (Adaptive compositor) are now the same.

You can ignore that probably since "Adaptive compositor" is the fasted one as per our various tests.

Now it's better than before but I use it as "Marco (No Composer)".
