[HC2] recommended way to use external Usb Hdd AND Bluetooth?

Unread post by trohn_javolta » Thu Aug 22, 2019 11:58 pm

Hi, I want to have Bluetooth on my Odroid HC2 and keep using my external, powered 3.5" HDD via Usb.
Since there is only one Usb 2.0 port on the HC2 my first approach was to just use this usb hub: https://www.banggood.com/Orico-F7U-Tran ... rehouse=CN
and connect both HDD and this Usb Bluetooth dongle: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0096Y2HFW/
to it. The chip in the Usb hub is VL817, which @tkaiser considers one of the better usb hubs: https://www.cnx-software.com/2018/08/24 ... ent-555658
I also connected the a power supply to the additional micro usb power port which I guess is an overkill since only an already powered usb hdd is connected and one bt dongle.
Still with this constellation the transfer speed network smb or nfs to usb Hdd or sata bridge hdd to usb hdd dropped from 20-25 mb/s to 15 mb/s.
Which is also noticeable when playing back movies from usb hdd via network on my shield tv box in kodi. It takes longer to start a movie, to get thumbnails, hickups in 1080p movies, long waiting when I skip forward.
In short this is not an acceptable solution.

Is there another way to have bluetooth on the HC2? Maybe via this serial port somehow?
Or should I stay via usb port and maybe try a simple 2 port usb hub/splitter?

I have no idea how the transfer speed could drop to 15MB/s from 25MB/s with the USB hub.
Do you have any other cheap USB2.0 hub instead of the luxury 3.0 one?

BTW, what do you do with the Bluetooth connectivity?

I can try with 2 other usb hubs and report back. Are there any experiences in extending the usb 2.0 hub at your end?

Also back to the serial uart port: Is there a possibility to connect a bluetooth module somehow? That would be the most elegant solution.

I added a homeassistant docker container and connected (amongst other things) my xiaomi plant sensors via bluetooth.

Edit: Same with cheapo usb 2.0 hub and 3rd one is not recognized by debian.

Is it maybe possible to connect such a HC-06 Bluetooth module to the 5 pin serial port and operate it?

The system console feature can be disabled in the 4pin serial port.
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/trou ... le_console

But HC-06 can't work with 1.8Volt IO.

Thx I looked into it a bit more and also feared the voltage problem...
Do you know of any working bt module that only needs 1.8V? A quick google search doesn't give much info.

Or is there maybe some extension board vor the serial port that gets additinal power and can have a bt module?

Else I'd have to deal with the usb port issue or maybe try different hubs, maybe just some simple usb 2 port "splitter" without additional power supply? I mean the bt dongle won't use up much power and the external hdd is powered separately.
Or I'll have to outsource it on either a spare Rpi1 or Rpi zero..but I think they will be too weak...
Odroid HC2 can handle home assistant with ease, next to being a nas and runnning some other servers and stuff on it so I thought why not.

I have no idea about the 1.8Volt Bluetooth interface either.

BTW, which file system do you use on the external USB storage?
Is it EXT4?
We will try to measure the average SMB performance with a similar HW configuration.

What is the transfer speed with your SATA storage on the HC2 metal frame?

Yes Ext4.
You mean over smb gigabit network? I still have an issue, where I only get around 60 mb/s as opposed to initial full 100 mb/s: viewtopic.php?t=32897
I could not resolve that.
Do you think it could be linked somehow?

As you see in the linked thread the network and hdd tests are fine. Only things left to tried I could think of are:
Limit everything to smb v2
try a different micro sd card for rootfs
exchange all lan cables..

Try the OMV OS image with a spare micro-SD card to narrow down root causes. We could get over 90MB/sec of SMB speed easily on the default OMV settings.

I know, I also had that speed once :'(
Is this omv image based on debian stretch, ubuntu bionic or sth. different?
I need to keep investigating this, thb I got frustrated over time.. I remember reinstalling armbian at one point because of speed issues and still had them...despite others reporting they get over 90 mb/s with armbian+omv on their hc1/2.

It must be Debian Stretch (Actually Armbian with some tweaks for NAS performance),
