[SOLVED] Kernel Panic when booting with multiple USB Disks

I have added 3 more USB disks for data storage only (no boot)
I have a Kernel panic at boot time when I boot with the 3 more USB disks plugged.
According the boot log, the boot disk is sda and the root partition sda2.

It seems that the kernel try to recognize a partition which doesn't exist sdd2 :?

My lasted test shows that it seems a kernel bug.
Because of the fact that my Seagate disks are not fully compatible with UASP, I have added this option at the end of bootargs " usb-storage.quirks=0bc2:ab30:u,0bc2:ab28:u" to use usb-storage driver instead.
When I remove this option, rebuild the ramfs and reboot, no kernel panic anymore :shock:

Something strange with the UAS driver...

We also had the same issue with Seagate Backup Plus disks while WD My Book had no issue with the Linux UASP drivers. :oops:

Yes. This is a well known issue for this Seagate disks for a long time. Using UASP driver is not mandatory, usb-storage one works flawlessly with in fact quite the same performance.

But the problem here is not this one.
Using option at boot time to disable the UAS built-in driver causes kernel panic only when booting, which is abnormal.

The full kernel log needs to be captured with a console cable. At the very beginning will be the command line parameters the kernel was passed. Its possible this information is getting corrupted (maybe line length exceeded?).

Alternatively, if a console cable is not available, it may be possible to record a video of the boot and frame step to see the kernel command line.

The boot.ini file use the disk UUID, I don't understand why it becomes sdb2 at boot time.

Can you try this?
Detach all USB disks except the one which has 'boot.ini' and root file system of an OS and power on.
When Petitboot is up and you are able to see the boot entry, attach all USB storages and carry on to boot.

The reason why you are seeing root=/dev/sd* instead of root=UUID=... when kernel panic happens after Petitboot is that Petitboot replace root=UUID=... to device path.

Petitboot does not the mistake when I remove this option "usb-storage.quirks=0bc2:ab30:u,0bc2:ab28:u" at the end of the bootargs. It looks like a parsing error :?:

Thanks, looks like it's the bug of Petitboot. The issue what I am seeing is that the storage order in Petitboot and when the actual kernel is boot could differ. Quick feasible workaround for your set up is to use PARTUUID instead of UUID.

Base on the information for your setup, since you have root=UUID=e139ce78-9841-40fe-8823-96a304a09859 you can replace the one with root=PARTUUID=03823826-02. This won't be replaced by Petitboot.

I think the parsing of bootargs is fine. As I explained in my previous feedback, it's the matter of the order of device storage recognized by Linux kernel. From the kernel crash logs you've attached, the first one shows root=/dev/sdd2 and the second one is root=/dev/sdb2 which should be root=/dev/sda2.

Can you remove 'amvdec_h264_4k2k' from /etc/modules and reboot?

No more error :) What this driver is it for ? I ask this question because I need to decode H264 videos.

Good to know, I think it's the driver for 4K H264 but you would have another driver module a.k.a amvdec_h264. Please try to run your stuff if you can decode H264.
