Autoboot from SSD

Unread post by Viald » Thu Aug 01, 2019 6:52 am

Hi.
I'm currently stuck. I did not find any clear explanation to autoboot the N2 from a SSD connected to USB.
Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Update the SPI flash to have the latest Petitboot with an SD card.

Thank you for your quick feedback.
I'll do it. I read all the thread, I saw that the last release of Petitboot is able to detect OS on USB devices, but I didn't see the capability to define a default OS to boot at startup.
My N2 will be headless, it will be a pain to connect keyboard and display after each reboot.

The optiin is mentioned in the thread. By default it boots the first OS in the list after 5-10s. If you have only one, it should be fine.

Sorry. I didn't see it.

I upgraded, Petitboot sees the USB SSD disk, and yes after 10 seconds it boots the SSD, but without success.
It seems that my SDcard cloning process doesn't work :(
Is there a specific method to clone the SDcard to the USB device ?

Thanks

You can use dd to clone the sd to your disk (and manually grow the rootfs), or the odroid-backup script.

Meanwhile, I used Etcher to write the ubuntu img file to the SSD. It works fine.
Thank you all for your precious help.

I'm trying to get my N2 to boot into a USB stick from from petitboot. I have installed the latest petitboot version. I have installed Ubuntu minimal on an SD card and it boots up fine when installed in the SD card slot. When I set the switch to SPI and try to boot the same SD card from a USB port, it doesn't boot. Is this a problem with the partitions on the SD card? Do they have to be formatted as ext4 or labeled a certain way?

Though I have not tried it, it should work the way you describe it. Does petitboot show anything in its menu when usb reader is connected?
Can you drop into a shell and run

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep sd
blkid
mount | grep petitboot

I got it set up to boot into a USB drive directly from Petitboot. See this thread: viewtopic.php?t=33873
