4k viedo not playing well with ubuntu 18.04

Unread post by matteoraggi » Tue Jul 30, 2019 11:53 pm

Hi, I am playing some mp4 for test on the new 4k: tv Hisense H55B7120 but the video is not working, I see a big grey line on the top and all the rest is black..
On raspbian I do tests around the monitor using tvservice. which other comamnd could I use to test the monitor? For example to know if monitortv is on or off, the screen resolutuon, name of the display etc.. like tvservice does?
I am using odroid n2 with Ubuntu 18.04.2 minimal

You can disable autodetection and force a resolution by editing /media/boot/boot.ini. Or are you referring to video playback?

Thanks a lot! and how to check if the monitor/tv is off or on?
I found it: XENIAL, is that good? Are there alternatives?
xenial apt for ubuntu looks to be better of tvservice for raspbian: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/xen ... tv.1x.html

There is no ubuntu xenial (16.04) for odroid N2. Only Bionic (18.04). Use the official image on the hardkernel website.

Ah yes, the right link is this one for ubuntu 18.04 and the other was for mistake the link to ubuntu 16.04: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/bio ... tv.1x.html
but in the descirption it says to work with many Nvidia-based video cards, as well as on the Voodoo3 video card... it not mention the Mali-G52 or MALI GPU.. Any ideas for similar software for odroid n2?

Indeed, that is specific to nvidia. What are you trying to do exactly?

You should be able to see it from sysfs, but I don't know the exact node name.

Disable HDMI auto detection feature by editing boot.ini file.
https://github.com/mdrjr/n2_bootini/blo ... oot.ini#L7

And try other 4K display options.

Code: Select all

#    "2160p60hz"        | 3840x2160 Progressive 60Hz
#    "2160p50hz"        | 3840x2160 Progressive 50Hz
#    "2160p30hz"        | 3840x2160 Progressive 30Hz
#    "2160p25hz"        | 3840x2160 Progressive 25Hz
#    "2160p24hz"        | 3840x2160 Progressive 24Hz
#    "smpte24hz"        | 3840x2160 Progressive 24Hz SMPTE
#    "2160p60hz420"     | 3840x2160 Progressive 60Hz YCbCr 4:2:0
#    "2160p50hz420"     | 3840x2160 Progressive 50Hz YCbCr 4:2:0
"c2play" command line video player in the minimal image must work well with 4K HEVC videos.

But lacks video decoding acceleration on N2. Only c2play and kodi currently support hardware decoding.

Thanks to all, this is the end of my checkup about the possibility to play video with odroid n2 with ubuntu 18.04 minimal: someone should develop a n2play as odroid c2 has c2play, because it not play so well on n2, here my tests in detail:
- kplayer is little maintained and they suggest to use smplayer;
- SMPlayer: is a graphical user interface (GUI) for the award-winning mplayer;
- mplayer: 4k videos 2fps hevc (maybe it can play well, but it stuck easily sometimes);
- mpv: frames are perfect, but are few for each second;
- c2play: it plays well, but it stuck at the end and it stop 3 seconds first of the end;
- kodi: is not yet supported on odroid n2.
- vlc videolan: UBUNTU 18.04 gapless will be added in the 4.0 release, there is no workaround for 3.0 unfortunately
This is why I strongly suggest to the developers able to do it, to create a new version of c2play named n2play and give at least a video player working well for odroid n2.
