N2 based Personal Video Recorder (using NextPVR)

Unread post by sub3 » Tue Jul 02, 2019 10:45 am

I recently received my N2, and have been busily porting my NextPVR software to run on it. NextPVR is a cross platform personal video recorder application, which runs on Windows, Linux, Mac and Docker. This software is used to make it easy to watch or record live TV, and provides great features like series recordings etc.

In this setup the N2 would be stashed away in a cupboard somewhere, acting as a backend streaming server, to provide live streams and recording capabilities to various clients (like Kodi, Emby, or the NextPVR iOS/Android apps). So far I've been very impressed with how the N2 has performed. Below is a pic from my N2, with dual tuner DVB-T stick, running NextPVR v5, streaming 8 live TV channel. For this demo I'm showing the streams in 8 vlc windows on a client machine elsewhere on the network. (NextPVR's "multi-rec" feature lets each tuner be used for more than one channel, so a dual tuner stick was able to provide these 8 channel simultaneously)

If you ears can stand it, here is a video of all the streams playing simultaneously

In the next couple of days I'll make a build available on the NextPVR website that can be used with the N2, for anyone that wants to try it out.

I don't want to stuff up your thread I just have one more question, any specific reason to use your software vs tvheadend? Does it do something more, better, different?

Either way it looks nice and I would try it.

NextPVR has existed for as long time in the Windows world, and only recently went cross platform. It probably does largely the same stuff as tvheadend (I've never used it myself), but gives people another option.

From what I've read, it sounds like NextPVR is easier to setup than tvheadend (but tvheadend gives you a zillions options if you need them).

NextPVR is available on Windows/Mac/Linux/Docker, and some people might like the consistency across platforms. There is also other client options for NextPVR.

FYI, an arm64 build of NextPVR is now available, and usable on an N2:
https://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.p ... ublic-Beta

On an N2 it's compatible with DVB, ATSC tuners, HDHomeRun, SAT>IP tuners (satellite, terrestrial, and cable), and IPTV services.

Setup is pretty straight forward. Instructions can be found here:
