OMV vs DietPi for HC1 NAS

Post by _HC1_dude »

I've ordered a HC1 for my first home NAS build.
I'm wanting to get NextCloud up and running, run piHole, perhaps Home Assistant, perhaps a web server for my daughter to practise with, and set up a backup destination for wifey-poo's Windows laptop.
I'm inviting opinions on OpenMediaVault vs Dietpi as the OS.

Sadly, what you want, is not plug and play on any OS and IMO both are wrong for this purpose:
- NextCloud up and running,
- run piHole
- perhaps Home Assistant
- perhaps a web server
OMV is technically a bulky software suite (not an OS) which already provide the same services as NextCloud. Webserver is also up since admin is web based ... to run same services you will need to manually adjust configurations, run them inside containers. Dietpi (not an OS but "justice") is Debian where many of matured system scripts are replaced with their dirty security hazard amateur version. For no technical reason.

If you really want all this at once, start with controlled environment - clean Debian OS - and install applications inside Docker container. It will be some manual work and some understanding how to configure them to run side by side.

I'm particularly interested in the availability of the Nextcloud mobile and desktop clients. As far as I know there is no OMV equivalent.

You better ask OMV folks for such details.

Well, I didn't ask but I did search - and the results of that search lead me to believe there is no OMV equivalent to the Nextcloud mobile and desktop clients. Likewise for Syncthing on iOS.
Thanks for your replies so far.
Anyone else?

Many people have run the NextCloud on Ubuntu or Debian.
Our Ubuntu server guide might be useful.

I use owncloud instead of nextcloud. One of the main reasons for it, they have .deb packages and repository for installation.
Which makes it easier to install and update in my opinion.

Check out the Games and Emulators section to find some of my work or check the files in my repository to find the software i build for ODROIDs.
