can't use as desktop ?

Unread post by kyliael » Mon Jun 10, 2019 6:50 pm

Hi there,

Since more than 1 week I'm trying to setup an Odroid C1 as a desktop.
Using the last Ubuntu Mate image, the one from Armbian, even tried with the Minimal one + manually installed Lightdm, Lxde, Mali-x11 and xserver-xorg-video-mali...

With Ubuntu Mate it's the worst. Moving a window is a pain, it takes 15sec just to move a window, and it can't play a youtube video. Very slow in 720p and freeze in 1080p
With Minimal + Lxde, it can move a window much better but youtube even freeze in 720p

I tried with a Rpi 3B+ ( supposed to be 2-3x slower than an Odroid C1 ... ) I can move windows, play youtube videos in 1080p, etc...

I was about to buy an Odroid XU4 to use as a desktop, but I'm wondering why Odroid are so slow compared to Rpi. If it's due to mali support, then no ARM card but Rpi will do the job correctly.
Any suggestion ?

If you use our official Mate image, try following items.

1. Change the CPU governor to Performance mode. https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/appl ... q_govornor
2. Change the window compositor to Marco (No compositor).
3. Reinstall the GPU driver ( sudo apt install --reinstall mali-x11 )
4. Use Kodi with Youtube add-on for smooth video playback.

changed to Performance
On Mate set Marco No Comp
Reinstalled Mali-x11

Just to move a window

Lxde : "ok" : https://youtu.be/KMuhKdnkScM
Mate : Definitively not acceptable : https://youtu.be/NjGAGCogeXc

For both, youtube is not usable with the browser even with h264ify

I'm still wondering why a Rpi is able to play youtube video in 1080p in the browser flawlessly since it's supposed to be 2-3x slower than this Odroid C1

RPI's gpu implements a well supported standard that integrates with most apps. You can getdecent playback from the C1 with c2play (c1 branch) and c2.video.helper.
