H2 Rev-B

Unread post by rooted » Tue May 28, 2019 12:58 am

There will be a new revision when it's re-released which was tested this 4 port SATA controller M.2 to 4 Port SATA 6G RAID Adapter(PCIe 2.0) IO-M2F9230-4IR

Discuss.
odroid wrote:We tested the IO-M2F9235-4I on the new H2 rev-B samples and it worked well.
But we needed a large ATX PSU to run six HDDs including two native SATA ports on the H2.

BTW, Intel just confirmed the delivery schedule of the J4105 SoC.
So we are checking our production schedule as well as other raw material stuff.
We will share the H2 re-launching schedule early next week.
I hope we can start to ship the H2 boards four~five weeks later.

How about alternative boards: https://geizhals.eu/?cat=hdadko&xf=1118 ... 9_M.2+PCIe
Would a Delock 54668 also work?

As such a card seems to be quite wide, is there still enough space to the ram modules?

There is no interference with RAM modules with M.2 to 4 Port SATA 6G RAID Adapter(PCIe 2.0) IO-M2F9230-4IR, but only small space is available.

What does a new revision actually mean? What will it be changed?

it would not be bad to change the pwm controller by +12V,
the one that can do 100% duty cycle (synchronous buck Half-Bridge/bypass)
so that the input voltage could be from 12V to xx
or fixed 12V input DC-Jack.

I was keen to know when H2 would return, but this is better.
Any chance you'll open orders before June30 so I can squeak in before tax year ends?
I'm ok to wait a few weeks for production/delivery.

since you guys make it possible to support 6 HDDs for ODROID-H2, are you gonna also make new case that will support 6 HDDs for ODROID-H2 ?

I am not optimistic to build a new case with 6 HDDs for fewer demands but we are considering to offer a showcase which could be built using a few market products.

The ODROID-H2 Rev B will have these minor changes.
<1> CLK-REQ signal pull resistor is added to support PCIe-to-SATA bridge board
<2> 12V SATA power circuit on the H2 board improvement for high power consumption HDDs like HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 series and Seagate IronWolf series.
<3> Add a M.2 screw for NVMe storage installation since many users had a hard time to find a proper screw to fasten their NVMe SSD.
<4> Pre-install the latest BIOS 1.05

You can find the Rev B schematics and PCB pictures in this link.
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-h2/hardw ... schematics

The BIOS revision history is available here. You can use the latest BIOS on the first batch Rev 0.1 too.
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-h2/hardw ... on_history

We ordered this ITX case to make a build instruction for DIY 6-bay NAS as @tobetter mentioned. Delivery may take two or more weeks from China to Korea.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/HCiPC-6 ... 19894.html
Once we receive it, we will write a Magazine article with several pictures.

We will start selling and shipping the ODROID-H2 Rev B from June 26th if everything goes well.

@KnowBe4,
We have no plan to make a new case for more than two HDDs since the power supply must be much bigger and the PSU must have more SATA power cables.

@odroid: Did you consider replacing the sata power connector with a standard molex one (that could be split with a Y cable)? Some complained it was difficult to find a power cable. You may not have enough room to do it though....

We want to save time.
Otherwise, we have to wait two more months at least if we make a new PCB and validate the changes.

I hope customers don't forget to put this item into their shopping cart.

May I ask to elaborate as above a little bit more?

The resistor - is it a fix to something similar as described in viewtopic.php?f=171&t=34188 (cold start sometimes makes pci-e controller card not visible)?

We will try several times of cold-boot with Rev-B to check whether the PCIe-to-SATA bridge board detects every time or not.

Edit: We tried 10 times of cold-boot loop test with Rev-B and there was no issue of the PCIe-SATA detection.
If you can solder a small resistor for your test, we will let you know the location and value of the resistor with a picture in your thread.

Too bad you didn't take the opportunity of this 1 year delay to add HDMI CEC... There is still no board like this on the market.

@YamashitaRen,
We tried to find an affordable CEC capable micro-controller(MCU) but we couldn't. The add-on solution was too expensive. Sorry about that.

@yZ5Cugjn3o5WA5DH,
We will make a plastic plate to mount the H2 board. The plastic plate just has several holes as an adapter.

So, H2 board with the plastic plate mounted would be compatible with mini-itx cases, is this correct?

I'm asking this because if so, then we have a lot more options for cases.

Thanks!

There are only 2 stat power connector on the board while this new rev can support up to 6 stat. So,what's the good solution for the power supply for those HDDs? How to power them on and off at the same time with the board in a simple way? Thanks for everyone's opinion.

I am considering to run H2 with regular ATX power which has likely 4 SATA power connectors. The case to run 6 drives for reference is just arrived and preparing to build up, we could share the progress next week if everything goes well.

if you do not use +12V (3.5" HDD) on the HDD power connectors on the board, then you can immediately connect +12V, without any alterations.
if you are going to use in the power connectors on the board of hard drives +12V (3.5" HDD), that
Very easy, just +12V connect after 12V converter DC-DC, eliminating it from the circuit.
The remaining converters (+5 and +3.3) are already with +12V

Maybe you can also give an estimate how much power is needed for 6x 2.5" disks?
(2.5" second-hand disks are cheaply available due to laptops being upgraded with SSDs)

The amperage consumption is written on the disc label.
For example 0.7A (700mA) x 6 = 4.2 A (at 5V circuit) = 21Watts

It is interesting having an external accessible main current sensor for a 6-10 amp range in 2020 and one power-switched net phy above 1Gbps for a H2 Rev-X.
The H2 is strong for energy saving in unpredictable idling profiles (e.g. local servers), capable RAM adjustment (does not matter if DDR4 or DDR5 that much) and good-value performance. Fair deal for longterm usage.

Are you looking for 9235 or 9230? 9235 looks like for a desktop PCI-e.

If it's 9235, please refer the link and make sure the controller 88SE9235 if you want to purchase from another store.

There is another one with 88SE9215 that looks same except M.2 pinout and the controller which is been tested while building 6 Bay NAS is 88SE9235. You will also need a length extension in order to place the card to ODROID-H2. We've tested with this.

I'd still want to know if the RAID version of the controller behaves better than the H2 over software RAID... with the combo of RAID types benchmarked 1,0,10 (and 5 only for sw as the controller doesn't support)...
Odroid H2 Rev B, 16GB Ripjaws, MP510 Corsair 512GB Nvme
