archlinuxarm lxqt

Unread post by dk23 » Tue May 21, 2019 11:03 am

I would like to have lxqt (or any other desktop) on archlinuxarm any pointers?
I have installed lxqt on xu4 by starting with X11 followed by lxqt but that does not work on N2. X11 does not start

ODROID N2 does not (yet) have X11 support.
There are no X11 drivers for the N2, therefore an X11 desktop that requires GPU acceleration (such as lxqt) won't work.

Also for most OSes Qt5 on arm64 is by default compiled against OpenGL, ODROIDs only support OpenGL ES. So there are two issues that prevent you from using lxqt.

doesn't matter what OS you use.. the situation with LXQT is the same.
Just use a desktop that does not require a 3D GPU, such as MATE, LXDE, XFCE etc.

The issue is not Arch, the issue is LXQT.

I must be missing something in my understanding. Doesn't MATE, LXDE, XFCE require a windowing system like X11?

Windowing system, yes... 3D GPU acceleration... no

LXQT requires Qt5 Qt5 requires 3D GPU acceleration.

Once again, the issue is with LXQT, not with X11, not with the OS, not with a Desktop Manager in general.

LXQT uses 3D hardware acceleration in form of "Qt5" hence the "QT" in LXQT.
3D Hardware acceleration for X11 does currently not work on the ODROID N2 therefore Qt5 doesn't work on X11 desktop, therefore LXQT doesn't work.
Get rid of LXQT (or other GPU accelerated desktop manager) and the desktop works.

Not to beat this to death but my point is if X11 under arch does not run (only X11 installed no desktop, started via startx) on a N2, than MATE, LXDE or XFCE will not. I implied from your above statements that they would ie using a DT that did not require 3D GPU acceleration. That was my mistake, the issue is with archlinuxarm and X11. Thank you for your patience.

You can use X11 on ArchLinuxARM, just install the driver:

xf86-video-fbdev

Since the N2 works with framebuffer currently you can get an X11 desktop on the N2 using ArchLinuxARM by using the driver I mentioned.

Once installed you can run all the desktop apps you care to, even those in Qt5, they'll work with the fbdev driver, and you can use xorg-xinit to startx from the terminal as opposed to using a display manager as well.

I haven't tried lxqt, but I'm using LXDE with the above setup currently on an N2.
