CS2 HDD LED constantly blinking

Unread post by noobs4u » Wed May 01, 2019 3:38 am

I'm not sure what to do here. Please note this did NOT happen on the initial install. I was using the CS2 with XU4Q as a simple NAS with samba. I clean installed dietpi to test the LCD/Fan scripts and decided to come back to the ODROID 18.04 Ubuntu image I was using because of dietpi's samba hassle only seeing one drive. Now the HDD led's on the LCD board will not stop blinking. I don't know what they are receiving but the write data says 20Mbs on the top drive and 40Mbs on the bottom, 0Mbs for read activity on both. It was not doing this before unless I was actually transferring data. Now its non-stop.

I used the following steps for install:

https://wiki.odroid.com/accessory/add-o ... e_settings

https://wiki.odroid.com/accessory/add-o ... loudshell2

I've done a fresh install twice and the drives still continue to write continuously. Would taking the drives out and wiping them externally (making them blank like new drives) help?

Lost and confused...

Using PM mode not actual raid so there wouldn't be anything to rebuild. That's what's weird!

is unattended-upgrades daemon active ? that is what came first in my mind, but two drives at once ... showing open files with lsof helps ?

I'm using it as a headless NAS so no desktop. None of that should be active by default, right? Just minimal image 18.04. Then apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && dist-upgrade. Nothing is getting written to the drives. But the LCD shows a write speed for both which never changes.

The unattended-upgrades daemon is also enabled on the minimal image, you can turn it off with systemctl stop unattended-upgrades and permanently disable it with systemctl disable unattended-upgrades, also I would check with lsof which files are open so can can check where the data goes

So, plugged the CS2 back in...both drives resume constant activity and CPU is also active.

then opened console and tried lsof

      Code: Select all

      root@odroid:~# lsof

Command 'lsof' not found, but can be installed with:

      apt install lsof

      root@odroid:~# apt install lsof
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to acquire the dpkg frontend lock (/var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend), is another process using it?
      root@odroid:~#
Bottom HDD stopped flashing within 3min of running

      Code: Select all

      systemctl stop unattended-upgrades
but the top drive is still flashing and CPU is still active.

After seeing one HDD become idle I immediately re-ran

      Code: Select all

      lsof
      Top drive still flashing, did

      Code: Select all

      apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade
and within a few seconds of it completing, both LED's are solid and no HDD or CPU activity.

I have no idea what was going on. Clearly something was happening with both CPU and HDD activity. Issue considered solved but by which means, I'm not certain. Thanks to @AreaScout for the suggestions.

      EDIT:

To see if I could repeat the above issue, I formatted my emmc, re-imaged and started over. The HDD lights began flashing again on the LCD board once the drives were formatted and samba was installed. I simply let it run the course and they eventually stopped on their own. I guess it's nothing? Everything works like a charm now, no unaccounted CPU or HDD activity. And I did nothing but wait it out this time. No code bashing or switch settings etc. I did note that both drives were writing @ 40Mbs instead of one at 20Mbs and the other at 40Mbs like last time. This would make sense of why one stopped blinking before the other on the first go around. Anyway, FOR SCIENCE! IT'S ALL FOR SCIENCE BRO!

Ok, I didn't remember it showed R/W speed, I was not using it for a very long time, for me the font is too small, you have to go < 20cm in front of it to be able to read it
