Standard 4 Pin PWM Fan Connector to H2 Fan Connector?

Unread post by oRAirwolf » Sat Dec 08, 2018 1:57 pm

I have a 92x25mm Noctua 5V fan that I was planning on using with my H2, but it appears that it uses a non-standard connector. Does anybody know if there is an adapter that will convert a regular 4 pin PWM fan connector to the one used on the H2?

That 4th pin is for PWM (pulse width modulation) and it allows the fan speed to be regulated by the motherboard based on the temperature it reads from the sensor associated with the fan header. I have never heard of a converter like you are asking for but that doesn't mean they don't exist. On the hand you would only need one if the H2 fan header is enclosed in a little plastic socket. If the fan header looks like the ones pictured in the link below you can just plug in the correct 3 wires and go.

https://noctua.at/en/can-i-run-4-pin-pw ... an-headers

EDIT: After looking at the pictures of the H2 board (viewtopic.php?f=168&t=32536) I only see one fan connector and it is 4 pin. So I guess what you are saying is that the Noctua plug won't fit in the H2 socket?

Yeah I posted a picture of the fan connector in my first post. It is not a standard connector.

I think I found it. Your fan might have a "mini GPU" pwm connector.

Nice find on the connector! However, the board has a male connector on it and the fan needs a female connector. I was able to find one, though:

I know it's your fan and all, but I think that the one that you linked is the wrong one.

On the one that I linked the white connector would be for the fan and the black connector would go to the board.

On the one that linked the black connector would go the fan and white connector to the board. Isn't that white connector a female mini GPU just like the fan?

I can confirm that adapter from FrozenCPU will NOT work with the H2. I'm 0 for 2 now. :(

doesn't it fit or whats the problem?

I'll probably just rewire the connector that comes with it to the fan I want to use - at least I don't see a reason why it shouldn't work.

The connector on the cable is too big for the port on the H2.

I sadly bought one of those GPU connectors as well. I wish somebody from HardKernel would be cool and let us know what connector the H2 is using.

Agreed, I opened a thread asking without any luck. I ended up spending more on adapters than the cost of the fan itself so I broke down and bought the fan which is massive and ugly compared to my Noctua I was using but it freed up a USB port.

It also sucks not having PWM control of the fan when plugged in via USB. I'd happily buy a PWM fan adapter from them rather than the crappy fan they sell. I'm probably just going to end up splicing the connector from the fan I ordered (begrudgingly) onto the adapter I ordered from Frozen CPU. I am going to email mouser and see if they might be able to figure out what it is.

After two minutes of looking at my H2 fan connector and remembering that it was called a "1.25mm wafer connector" somewhere in the literature, I am 98% certain that it is a Molex picoblade or equivalent.

The connector on the fan appears to be stamped "MK1" which would agree with drawing from Molex here: https://www.molex.com/pdm_docs/sd/510210400_sd.pdf that says trade mark is M _ _ (fill in blanks)

It is the same connector that is used on pixhawk drone controllers, and I just confirmed this by pulling a board out and test fitting the fan into a female socket.

Molex sells pre-terminated whips, which are available on ebay for like $4.95 for a bag of 10. I am going to order some, mostly because my China knockoff quadrotor came with like 32AWG terminated whips and the crimps fail if you look at them wrong, so I need some spares anyways.

If anybody knows where to get some 4-pin male (pin side, like on the PCB) inline (wire to wire) style connectors, I would gladly make up a couple of adapter whips to share.

Do you mean adapters so we can use normal fans with 3 or 4 pins with the H2? If so have you had any success finding the parts needed? The 92mm fan I got for my H2 is entirely too loud and I need to switch back to my Noctua fan but don't want to use up a USB port to power it.

You could use the 5v GPIO pin to power a fan.

I'm not sure what that is, can you provide some more information about the connector and how I can do that?

The expansion header has a 5v output and ground, I don't have a link but it should be on the H2 wiki.

Oh I see, that would still require some soldering or something right? Or do you think there's an adapter I could use?

Two of these male to female jumpers should work, depending on the fan header you have.

You could also use a 12v fan using 12v from the SATA power connector. 12v fans are much more common and usually less expensive.

Indeed, and you can run a 12v fan on 5v usually.

yes, I have parts now -- male (board side) 4-pin PWM fan cables + female picoblade pre-terminated whip

will get to cutting and testing this weekend hopefully.

I got an adapter like this but it's still too big to fit the odroid PWM connector:

Has anyone managed to buy a pre-made adapter that works?

There is a fantastic "How to guide" for modding a fan to fit the H2, written by a fellow forum member, mansuiki.
