Officially the quota system is illegal, they call it metrics. They need to meet certain performance metrics, which really means there is a set number of tickets each officer must exceed or they will be penalized in some way, be it verbally or otherwise.

It is sad, it's a load of shiat.

Yes, I don't think you'd be arrested, but you may be taken to the precinct and they might try to identify you there and after a few hours they'll let you go with a fine. So, not a pleasant experience.

Nothing like having some free time to work on projects, only to have your internet connection decide it wants to party like it's 1999.
Currently getting single digit kilobyte per second download rates.

I was thinking about that not long ago, back in the mid to late 90s I was on dialup and generally connected at 38.8 or so since I had a softmodem.

Today my connection is 300+ megabit. Almost 10,000 times faster, that is what you call progress.

I remember it taking me like 8 hours to download 100 megabyte, now it takes less than 3 seconds. Crazy.

*edit*
I just did the math, if my connection didn't fluctuate (which it did) I was getting a maximum of 17.1 megabyte per hour. Now I get 42 megabyte per second.

It's amazing how fast things have gotten. First time on the internet in the late 80s my connection was 2,400-bit/s and that seemed fast at the time. Spent a good chunk of the early 90s at 14.4.

I remember tying up the phone line for days to download what I can get in minutes now. I also remember the pain of somebody picking up the phone and killing your connection. Usually when you where at 95% of that multi day download.

Then I got spoiled in the mid to late 90s and had access to a T1(1.544Mbps) and eventually a T3(44.736Mbps) at work (One of the perks of being a network/system admin for a couple different ISPs at the time) but still only dial-up at home.

So needless to say I had a large(I think 2gb) hard drive that went to work with me every day.

I'm liking the progress on the price front, those connections cost thousands, now I pay $40 a month for more and can buy a $60 sbc that out classes the tens of thousands of dollars the servers I used to work on.

*edit*

However not liking storage getting smaller, After being responsible for a lot of other peoples data, the fact that I could sneeze and blow a terabyte of storage off my desk terrifies me.

I couldn't imagine 40 Mbs back then, I worked as a tier 2 tech for Roadrunner back around '99 or so. It was 10 megabit in the city where I lived, going from dialup to that was amazing. I got enough networking knowledge to know I didn't want to do it for a living, I love being outdoors too much to be locked inside a secure building.

I had a device that would allow you to answer the phone for a short call, otherwise it was disconnected and it was terrible. I was all like hurry and get off the PHONE!

I too started in the late 90's with a winmodem. Had a linux driver for a specific 2.2.x kernel and wanted to migrate to 2.4, but the old driver wouldn't work. Had to keep two kernels and boot them alternatively depending on whether I wanted to go online or use 2.4.
Used to wake up between 4 and 5 to get online for an hour and download an mp3 from shady sites... The phone service was free at that hour and I remember I hated the phone company with a passion because they had a monopoly and wouldn't invest in docsis/adsl. Ironically, I ended up working for them :) and I still am.

We must be getting old to remember such things :)

Wish me luck. Tomorrow I'm going in for knee surgery. The up side is I'll have two weeks off, hopefully I'll have time to finish my various projects I've started...

Good luck on the surgery. Replacement or screws? Two weeks it must be screws, my wife had to get that done because she played basketball in school and damaged her knee.

@rooted I'd say 40 Mbs would have been not much different an experience then 10 Mbps back then for most people. When you are used to 700mb taking days to download; 3 minutes to download looks a lot like 10 minutes.

I didn't like the work environment either, and the being on call and bs senior management(at multiple different companies), so I ended up quitting, I do horticultural/agricultural work now.

@mad_ady winmodem's I despised those things. Even on windows the drivers didn't work right half the time, and a lot of cpus didn't really have the grunt to play modem, at the same time as doing everything else.

Good luck with the knee and the projects.

Fortunately it's not screws, just a broken meniscus. Had a broken rotula that needed screws 10 years ago though. But I intend on getting the maximum downtime even if it's not such big surgery.

Thanks. My biggest challenge these next weeks will be to stay hidden from the kids so that they let me use the computer... Queue in the mission impossible theme song...

Since today is international child's day, happy birthday to all you children at heart out there. :)

I rarely use a PC, it's been weeks since I used my laptop. Only when working on something that strictly requires it.

How is your pain level?

I'm not feeling much pain, but I do have ice packs on my knee and tubes coming out of it. :) I'm preparing myself for merger with robots when the singularity strikes :)

I find a computer vital for bigger projects which require more typing. A phone screen holds too little information compared to a dual-monitor setup, and I can only type so fast with a thumb with hacker's keyboard on android...

I can swipe on an onscreen keyboard about as fast as I can type on a keyboard, when not having to correct words or use special characters. I can't touch type well at all since strictly using the swipe method.

I have written probably six or eight Android apps entirely on phones using the AIDE application. That's a test of patience.

I've never learned to swipe. Mostly because I type commands a lot of the time. Always touch typing with hacker's keyboard.

It was like an oven, I was only up there for a few minutes but got light headed. I try to keep it about 25° at my house all year, often my AC struggles in the summer.

It's hot in Florida, the sun is intense and the humidity is awful.

The humidity is the part I can't handle. When I'm working here in Ontario 28c and high humidity and I'm done. However when I'm working out in the Okanagan I can do 40c and keep work like it's nothing, because next to no humidity.

i often wonder why there is not more "odroid" members..on that note i guess not all op`s join the forum having never had a fault to deal with ..but i do remember "odroid" saying that sales went way past 200K for the xu4..i guess a lot of miner setups were made from these units..

futher more when the xu3 came out it seemed to me to be the most practical and optional choice out of the market..so i brought one ..it walks all over pi-boards in many ways..once again leads me to wonder why one would bother with the pi`s

The thing that kept me here and using these devices is @odroid and the rest of the community, the fact that the hardware is really good is a bonus.

Look how many post @odroid has (almost 28,000!). What other CEO dedicates this amount of time and effort into supporting their products? None that I have seen.

I spread the word about odroid devices to anyone who listens, sometimes even to those who don't :)

I too stayed for the community :)

RPIs are popular because they are well known - to the point that even people who are not technical have heard of them (e.g. a director in my company), and also they are perceived as cheap enough to be disposable. Nobody thinks of performance/reliability. For a project we're doing I had give them details why odroids were preferred to rpis. I hope they listened...

If I had to guess I would say yes to the Go. I have a feeling hardkernel has fully backed off the N1, not sure if it will be coming at all.

36c high humidity. Humidex/Heat Index/RealFeel or what ever you want to call it in the mid 40s.

So in the basement, working on some projects. aka fighting with git, and cursing a lot.

Really can't wait until we have a fully mainlined kernel for the c2, having to do a lot of backporting is bs.

Started off my father's day with the big one complaining about not being able to wear shorts because it's raining, and the little one crying because he didn't want daddy to go to work...

I'm going to be avenged when they become fathers as well ... muhahaha

The left one, which got operated on 2 weeks ago is fine. The right one which got operated a year ago (and 10 years ago as well) makes a squeaky noise. I guess my ninja days are over... :(

I don't want to give up on it, but I feel I need a copy of joy's flash because his boots from spi while ours doesn't. I don't require flash boot, but it's an interesting problem to look at. Unfortunately I'll have to do some home improvement for the next couple of months so time will be scarce.

Sounds interesting, I don't have a desktop myself. I do but it's in the closet somewhere.

Older hardware can be fun to play with.
