[SOLVED] Odroid-XU4 won't boot

My XU4 will not boot. It was working before it froze. I've rebooted it and from then, it is in a reboot loop.
I've tried different sd-cards and os builds (ubuntu, arch, omv, android). Red LED stays on, blue LED stays on for a few seconds, then blinks a couple of times and reboots. I'm using the official 5V/4A power supply. Only an ethernet cable is connected.
Serial logs from official Ubuntu image (ubuntu-18.04.3-4.14-minimal-odroid-xu4-20190910.img) shows kernel booting fine. It reboots trying to start systemd (the last line from serial logs...). Here is the serial log

According to your log, kernel booted well but it couldn't mount the root file system probably.
Did you try a UHS-1 microSD card?

Did you flash the OS images with Etcher? Don't extract .xz file when you use Etcher.

I've tried UHS-1 SD card as well, still no luck. I did flash the OS image using Etcher without extracting. I also tried arch (as per arch arm wiki), still no luck.
Unfortunately, I don't have a UART cable so, I'm using an arduino mega for UART from ttySAC0 connected to shifter shield at 5v. Log gets cutoff and it reboots.

Since we don't use Arch linux, it is not easy to trace a root cause at this moment.
Try ubuntu-18.04.3-4.14-minimal-odroid-xu4-20190910.img.xz again.
And show us the log from the u-boot stage.

BTW, when did you buy your XU4? How long did it work fine?

I don't have the odroid UART to USB cable or any other 1.8v UART cable, so I'm not able to get logs from uboot stage. I can only use the /dev/ttySAC0 which as I understand requires GPIO to be initialized (please correct me if I got it wrong). Here's the log from SAC0

I got my XU4 in Aug, 2018. It worked fine till Jan, 2020. It was my NAS. One day, it froze and did not respond even after waiting for 2 hours. I had to disconnect the power and it never booted again
P.S. It wasn't on all the time. I used it for only 1-2 hrs a day

don't know if it is the isuue but I get "mmc_init -5" and "bad CRC" for all SD cards I have

I couldn't find any clue in the u-boot message. :(
Ignore that messages since you don't use an eMMC module.

Those SD cards must be compatible with XU4.

Please try this Android image to check whether there is a hardware issue or not.

The error mmc_init: -5, time 4 is not the problem for your issue and your SD cards are properly working. The logs are not sufficient to find out the issue. If your XU4 keeps rebooting, please do remove all attached USB devices and try again. Also, you could remove console=tty1 in boot.ini to see more logs.

At line 1001 in that log it says "shell@odroidxu3", does that mean it did boot? After that, it rebooted again... :-(

I tried removing the console=tty1. But, the log is exactly the same. I did see that the command line has changed in logs. Other than that, it's exactly the same

Android Self-installation process might take up to 1~2 minutes and will reboot once automatically.
After that you can access the Android home screen via HDMI display with a mouse/keyboard.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear.
Android self-installation process completed fine and it rebooted as expected. It started to boot and then for some reason rebooted. This goes on and on.
There's nothing output to HDMI. My monitor says "HDMI connected" and then "no signal" like in a loop.
I've captured the UART logs starting from the self-installation process until the device rebooted a few times, using plink to a file. The Odroid and the file content is untouched while capturing the logs.

I think you did as much as you could and there seems to be a hardware issue probably.
I don't know how it worked several months and died recently.

Do you have another 5V/4A PSU?
Since some people reported the random reboot issue was caused by a unstable PSU,

Our warranty period is only two months. Sorry about that.

No, I don't have another PSU that can supply 5V4A. But, I did check the PSU output with DMM and it was a stable 5.21V output, 5V0 pin on CON10 connector gives me about 5.02V to 5.15V

If the 5V0 rail voltage level on the CON10 is not lower than 4.8 Volt in the booting process, your PSU must be fine.

But there was no critical error message in the Kernel booting log and I have no idea what is wrong indeed. :(

@odroid is this the same behavior one might expect if there is a broken temperature sensor and the board thinks it's overheating? Or does it simply shut down then?

I'm starting to doubt that my board is being reset (hard reset probably?) instead of reboot.
I can interrupt the booting process by pressing the "return" key at the uboot prompt. It'd drop me into uboot shell and I can execute commands there. While in the shell, my board won't reboot automatically.
While booting any distro, I can see that the kernel loads and the init process is started. Then I'm back to uboot again. I've tried setting the "rescue", "emergency" and "init=/bin/sh" parameters but, I'm not able to get to the shell.
Rarely it gets to login prompt but, before I can type anything, it is back to uboot.

I've managed to stop the boot process and get a pre-mount debug shell on Arch Linux.
I couldn't get it on ubuntu or android. Even on Arch, I had to set "udev.log-priority=debug". Maybe it needed some delay, I'm not sure.
Thermal zone temps were in the range of 40~50 C. I get spammed by messages like
"thermal_zone3: sd-device: Not a key-value pair: '0'
sd-device-monitor: Failed to create device from received message: Invalid argument"
If I try to continue the boot process, it gets to the welcome message and reboots...

I haven't gone through the entire log yet. I'm attaching it here in case you are interested.

It must shutdown instead of rebooting.

I've tried to read 13478 lines of the very long log. :o
I guess the SD card host interface seems to be broken.
To prove my assumption, you might need to place the root file system in a USB storage.

Tried placing the root file system in USB storage, same story. I can mount my sd card in the pre-mount shell and read/write to it without any issues. The USB drive is recognized too.

I've managed to get my Odroid up and running again... It was the PSU.
So, here's what happened. Since different OSes were failing at different stages, I've decided to tryout all the available OSes and see if I could get more info. I was trying out the armbian with kernel 5.4. It did not boot but, the power LED started to blink. DMM showed the voltage on 5v0 rail was varying from 1.2V to 5.14V. So, pulled out the ATX unit from my old desktop and connected it to the odroid. It just booted up fine.
