[SOLVED] HC2 - Cannot find IP address

Unread post by Angelova » Fri Jan 17, 2020 8:18 pm

Some weeks ago I purchased a ODROID-HC2.
As I want to make a NAS, I downloaded the .img file as in your links: OMV_4_Odroid_XU4_HC1_HC2.img.xz
I wrote the .img file on the SD card according to the instructions and then inserted the SD card on the board and powered on with a 12v power supply (5A). I measured the voltage of the power supply to be 12.30 when the board is attached. I did not attach an hard disk yet.
After the power was connected one red, blue and green light switched on. The blue light start to blink.
I wait for about 25 minutes and then i connected the ethernet cable from the board to my PC and start to search the IP address with the Angry IP scanner tool.
The yellow light of the ethernet port also switched on.
The Problem was that the IP scan did not find any IP address.

Then I used another ethernet cable, repeated the IP scan, but yet no IP found.
Then I used a different SD memory card (16GB) which i normally use for the raspberry PI. I repeated all the procedure above from the beginning and yet no IP found.

At this point I downloaded the Armbian image for the HC2, and also tried with this OS, but no working.

Overall I spent several hours trying to make this thing work. As the board does not have the HDMI interface I cannot provide more info.

Please help

Images are tested and blue led blinking is already a good sign.

Check and change cables, I assume DHCP is working on your network? If you just plug it to your PC it will not get IP.

Checked both cable and DHCP using with my PC, there is no problem. But I and still cannot connect with Odroid board.
Anyway if the blue led is blinking, assuming that the board booted correctly using the Armbian OS.
Can I remove the SD card and read it in my PC to check the syslog files?
Do you think it can be useful?

As said in previous post, I start the HC2 board with SD card loaded with Armbian, waited several minutes, the blue light was blinking, then I switched off and insert the SD card in my PC to check the logs.
in the /var/log/ directory I found only two logs have been modified:

1) armbian-hardware-monitor.log:

### Activated 1 lzo zram swap devices with 997 MB each

### Activated Armbian ramlog partition with lz4hc compression

2) armbian-ramlog.log:

Mounting /dev/zram0 as /var/log/

IMHO you have a PC in DHCP mode [it expects to get a IP address from a DHCP server/router]
and you connect the ODROID directly to this PC without a router. That wouldn't work..
You need a DHCP server or router for both to communicate.

Ignore me, if I'm wrong

It works, thanks for the support.

Anyway a quick note regarding the OMV4 pacakge, The image file comes with the extension .xz, which is a compressed format.
Linux distribution provides the "disk" utility to restore the image file on the SD card and unfortunately it accepts the .xz format as input file but does not make the decompression, so It ends up with a corrupted image on the SD card.
The correct procedure is to decompress first and then use the disk utility to write on the SD card.

Good to hear you solved the problem.

BTW, the Etcher flashing program decompresses the .xz file on the fly without problem.
