XU4 solid red light after a power outage

Unread postby Mims » Sun Aug 12, 2018 10:56 pm

Hello,

My XU4 was shut down unexpectedly during a power outage. I reboot it but only the red light was on, solid red light. I thought it was due to a corrupted eMMc. I burned a brand new image of Dietpi on my eMMc but no success.
Even the fan does not turn on.

Is my XU4 dead or something?

Thank you for your help

You'll need to check that the power supply outputs stable 5V. Also check that the boot switch is in the emmc position. Optionally try with a sd.

It is very worth to try the eMMC recovery process first.

Power supply provides stable 5.24V.

I followed the steps but unfortunately the red light is solid on and nothing happens :/

Would a UART kit be useful?

If the recovery(Android image) didn't boot from SD card, your board seemed to be damaged by unknown electrical shock. :(
In that case, the UART kit is not useful.

Did you check the slide switch position carefully?

I did :)

There is no way to know what might be the faulty part?

It is possible that the PMIC has been damaged. You can try to power the board by supplying 5V and GND via the GPIO pins from a stable power supply. Make sure not to short anything, since there is no protection. There's also a wiki page for bypassing the PMIC.

Yes. You should try that if it starts via the gpio pins. If it doesn't start, bypassing the pmic may have no effect and the soc may be fried...

I'd say you may need some sort of UPS or surge protector if it was just a power glitch. It it's weather related (lightning struck power lines) you may get burned by induced overvoltages on the ethernet cable/hdmi port.

Yes it seems the XU4 is a bit sensitive to power fluctuation, I lost the network on one of my XU4 after lightning struck a transformer near my house and the power went down.

Luckily it still works with a USB network adapter.

@rooted: any idea if there are surge protectors for ethernet?

Thank you for your help. I bought a new one.

Do you know if UPS have surge protecfion by default?
Does a surge protection need to be on the XU4 or can it be on the power outlet?

I think it varies, but there old ones I have lying around the house do.

I would plug the XU4 power cable directly into the UPS.

You definitely want to protect the network cable also, I have seen a few people (myself included) lose the network from known/unknown shock.

UPS -> multi-socket + rj11 -> any devices

Would it work?

I don't know. UPS have more than one plug, why use a surge protector strip instead of the plugs on the UPS?

Don't you mean rj45?

*edit*
You have DSL I guess, if that's the case then yes on the rj11.

Something like this is perfect if you have DSL based internet. (inexpensive also)

If you live outside the US you can find something comparable I'm sure.

You could plug your modem + rj11, router, XU4 and still have a free battery backup plug available.

Plus it has four protected plugs on the other side.
